Davis Launches Frederick to Series Sweep

Salem Red Sox News Release
Frederick, MD (April 7, 2013) - Almost singlehandedly, Glynn Davis dragged a broom over Salem in Sunday's series finale. Aided by five no-hit innings from the Keys bullpen, Davis belted two home runs-a game-tying shot in the sixth and a game-ending bomb in the tenth-driving in every run for Frederick in a 3-1, ten-inning triumph to complete the series sweep. Davis also made an excellent diving catch to rob Nick Natoli of a base hit in the top of the tenth. For the second straight day, Salem received five innings of shutout pitching from its starter, but the bullpen blew a save and the Sox fell to 0-3 on the year.
Kyle Stroup delivered an impressive performance for Salem, pitching for the first time in 582 days after missing all of 2012 with an ACL injury. The burly righthander needed just 53 pitches (34 strikes) to toss five scoreless frames, permitting three hits and one walk, with two strikeouts. Stroup took the mound with a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first and never relinquished that advantage, but Salem's bullpen could not put the game away.
Sean Coyle delivered another multi-hit performance for Salem, perpetuating his great start with a single in the first inning. Four batters later, Garin Cecchini laced an RBI single to left to drive in Coyle and give the Sox an early 1-0 edge. But Keys starter Tim Berry settled down and did not allow another run in the duration of his five-inning outing.
Facing Mike McCarthy in the last of the sixth, Davis crushed a 1-1 pitch down the line and over the fence in left to tie the game at one. McCarthy bounced back and did not allow another run in his three and a third innings on the hill, getting some help from Robby Scott, who stranded the winning run at third base in the bottom of the ninth. But in the last of the tenth, Connor Narron singled, moved to second on Sammie Starr's sacrifice bunt, and freely trotted home when Davis blasted another bomb over the left-field fence, taking Scott yard to end the ballgame.
Salem's starting pitching allowed just four runs (two earned) in the series, but the Red Sox offense scored just four runs and hit .147 in the three-game sweep. It's the first time since 1998 that Salem has started a season 0-3.
The Red Sox will look to bounce back in the second city of the road trip, with game one of a three-game set in Woodbridge, VA scheduled for 7:05 on Monday night. Mike Augliera will make his Carolina League debut for Salem, while Potomac will have lefthander Kylin Turnbull make the start in the series opener.
