Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

EASTLAKE, OHIO - A grand slam by Jaylin Davis capped a five-run fifth inning that put the Cedar Rapids Kernels in front for good in an 8-4 win Wednesday against the Lake County Captains at Classic Park. Cody Stashak picked up the win, pitching against Cleveland Indians Michael Brantley and Roberto Perez during their rehab assignments.

Cedar Rapids (10-10, 46-43) took a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning. Jermaine Palacios doubled with one out in the frame and later scored on a two-out RBI single from Zander Wiel.

Lake County (7-12, 47-42) answered with home runs in the second and fourth innings to grab a brief lead. Jose Medina hit his fourth blast of the year to tie the game in the second. During the fourth, Connor Marabell recorded his sixth round-tripper to put the Captains in front, 2-1. However, those would be Stashak's only runs allowed in a quality start.

In the top of the fifth, Davis lifted the Kernels to a 6-2 lead. Palacios opened the scoring with an RBI single that plated Kevin Garcia. The bases were loaded by the time Davis came up, and he crushed a grand slam to give Cedar Rapids the lead. It was Davis' first career grand slam and first Kernels home run and the first Cedar Rapids grand slam of the year.

Stashak protected the Kernels' advantage through his six innings of work. He only allowed two runs during his 10th quality start over 14 starts this season. He also retired nine of the last 10 batters he faced after yielding Marabell's home run.

Brantley and Perez each faced Stashak three times in Wednesday's contest. Brantley went 2-for-3 with a double and a single before ending his outing with a 4-1 groundout. Perez was held hitless, going 0-for-2 with a walk.

Both teams traded runs over the final frames. Palacios scored on a wild pitch in the top of the seventh before Lake County scored twice in its half of the inning. Medina came home via wild pitch, and Willi Castro later added an RBI groundout. Cedar Rapids added one final tally in the top of the ninth when Luis Arraez singled to drive in Casey Scoggins.

The win went to Stashak (6-5) while the loss was charged to Brock Hartson (5-4). Hartson gave up six runs over five innings pitched to suffer the defeat. Williams Ramirez picked up the save for the Kernels, posting two shutout innings for his second save.

Game two of this three-game series is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. ET (10:00 a.m. CT). Left-hander Lachlan Wells (1-1, 1.76 ERA) will start for Cedar Rapids against Lake County right-hander Shao-Ching Chiang (5-6, 4.16 ERA).
