August 16, 2013 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Winston-Salem Dash News Release

SALEM SQUEAKS PAST WINSTON BY ONE Despite Jake Cose's stellar start, the Dash lost their fifth straight game by a score of 2-1 to the Salem Red Sox in front of 7,031 fans Thursday at BB&T Ballpark. Cose, who took a no-hitter into the fifth, went seven innings and allowed just one run on two hits, but he settled for a no decision. The Sox claimed a 2-1 lead on Keury De La Cruz's sacrifice fly in the eighth inning, and Matty Ott tossed a pair of spotless frames to earn the save and help Miguel Peña collect his seventh win (7.0 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 5 H, 5 K).

NO SWEEP ZONE This is the 82nd regular season series at BB&T Ballpark, and Winston-Salem has yet to suffer a sweep at home inside the Carolina League's newest stadium in its four-year history. Among the eight CL clubs, only the Dash and the Potomac Nationals have avoided a home sweep thus far this season. Tonight marks the ninth time in BB&T Ballpark's history that the Dash are facing a possible sweep. Winston has outscored its opposition 58-31 in its first eight such games.

AVOID THE LOW FIVE Since BB&T Ballpark opened prior to the 2010 season, Winston-Salem boasts the third-best home record in all of Minor League Baseball (166-107, .608). However, the Dash have lost four consecutive home games dating back to August 6, which matches the longest home skid in BB&T Ballpark history. The Dash dropped four consecutive home games from May 18-21, 2011. Winston has not lost five home contests in a row since at least the 2004 season.

DOUBLE CROWN? Winston-Salem infielder Chris Curley leads the Carolina League in home runs (22) and RBIs (88). Among High-A players, the Fort Mitchell, Ky., native is fifth in home runs (three shy of the top spot) and third in RBIs (10 off the lead). In addition, Curley enjoys sizable leads atop the circuit in hits (135, +9), runs scored (81, +6) and total bases (229, +39).

ROCKY ROAD Winston-Salem is buried in one of its roughest stretches of baseball during the Dash era. For the first time since the franchise became the Dash prior to the 2009 season, Winston has lost nine of 10 games. The Dash's five-game losing streak is their first since August 16-20, 2011, while Winston-Salem has never lost more than five consecutive games in the Dash era. Winston-Salem last lost more than five straight games when the Warthogs endured a six-game skid from April 25-30 of 2007.

ONE SHY OF A DOZEN Winston-Salem leads the Carolina League in total runs (625) and runs per game (5.1), but the squad has mustered only 39 runs over its last 12 tilts (3.3 runs per game). During this slump, the Dash have not recorded more than five runs in any game, which is the longest such streak since 2009. In the first season of the Dash era, Winston failed to surpass the six-run mark for 23 consecutive games from July 29 to August 22.

ATOP MINOR LEAGUE BASEBALL Dash infielder Micah Johnson paces all minor league players with 79 stolen bases and 102 runs scored. Within the stolen base category, Travis Jankowski of Lake Elsinore (High-A, San Diego) sits in second with 71. Even though he did not score Thursday, Johnson remains two runs ahead of fellow White Sox farmhand Marcus Semien for the top spot. Semien, who played with the Dash throughout the 2012 season, is the only other player in Minor League Baseball with at least 100 runs scored.

DASH DOTS Jake Cose worked into the sixth inning before allowing a run Thursday, which pushed his scoreless streak to 19 innings before it ended... After Friday's series finale, the Dash hit the road for a seven-game road swing to Frederick and Potomac...Winston has clinched losing records against all three Southern Division squads... Bryan Blough leads High-A in innings (144.2).
