Winston-Salem Dash News Release

EIGHT-RUN FIRST SETS TONE FOR ROUT

Winston-Salem plated eight runs in the opening frame en route to a 12-5 thumping of the Salem Red Sox on Tuesday at LewisGale Field. During the first inning, the Dash sent 13 men to the plate, and the club amassed nine hits. Every offensive starter except for Kevan Smith scored a run during the monster inning. Courtney Hawkins, who hit a three-run blast in the first, capped the scoring with a two-run long ball in the eighth. Starter Bryan Blough befuddled the Red Sox over seven innings, allowing two runs (one earned) and whiffing seven.

RECORD-SETTING FIRST

For the eighth time in the Dash era, Winston-Salem scored eight runs in an inning. This offensive explosion marked the third time that the Dash have posted an eight-run inning in 2013 (May 26 at Carolina and May 28 vs. Frederick). The franchise has not seen more than eight runs come around in a single frame since August 23, 2006, when the Warthogs scored nine in the fifth frame of a 14-9 win at Lynchburg. The club did collect nine hits during the first, which is good for a new Dash record.

HAWKINS' HOMERS

Winston-Salem outfielder Courtney Hawkins posted the second multi-homer game of his season and minor league career Tuesday. He also drove in a career-high five RBIs on his two homers. Hawkins, who also went yard twice in the Dash's 5-2 win at Frederick on April 10, has hit safely in all four games since returning from the disabled list (left shoulder) on Sunday. During that span, he is 5-for-16 (.313) with three homers, seven RBIs and five runs scored.

CLIMBING QUICKLY

Hawkins is tied for second in the CL with 10 long balls, but he has played in only 27 games. There are 76 minor league players with 10 or more home runs, and Hawkins has played in the fewest number of games and gotten the fewest number of at-bats (95) among them.

THE SURGE CONTINUES

With 12 games remaining in the first half, Winston-Salem is a half-game behind Myrtle Beach for the top spot in the Southern Division standings. Myrtle Beach has lost 11 of its last 12, including a 9-2 defeat at home against Potomac on Tuesday. The Dash will finish the first half with games against Wilmington (7), Lynchburg (3) and Salem (2), while the Pelicans play Carolina (8), Frederick (3) and Potomac (2) down the stretch. The Red Sox are four-and-a-half games behind the Birds in the division race.

FARRELL NAMED PLAYER OF THE MONTH

Dash infielder Jeremy Farrell was named the Carolina League's Topps Player of the Month for May, the league office announced Wednesday. Farrell hit .320 with five homers and 23 RBIs in May. That RBI total was tied with teammate Chris Curley for the CL's lead during the month. The former Pirates farmhand leads the CL with 41 RBIs and is tied for sixth with eight homers.

FORMER YANKEE BRACKMAN IS ABOARD

Righty Andrew Brackman, who pitched briefly for the Yankees in 2011, has been activated from the disabled list and is eligible to pitch for the Dash tonight. Brackman, who signed with the White Sox during the offseason, had been on the DL the entire season. The former NC State product was the 30th overall pick in the 2007 draft, and he owns a 5.36 ERA in his four-year minor league career spanning 123 outings.

ON-BASE STREAK STILL MiLB'S BEST

Adam Heisler extended his on-base streak to 43 games with a two-run single and a walk on Tuesday. Heisler boasts the longest active on-base streak in Minor League Baseball. Jordan Lennerton of Toledo (Triple-A, Detroit) has the second-longest active streak, and he extended it to 36 with a 1-for-5 day Tuesday. Heisler has reached safely in all 21 of his games in Winston this year. The Mobile, Ala., native is hitting .301 (50-for-166) with 18 RBIs and 30 runs during the run, which began late last season in Great Falls.
