Frederick Keys News Release

WINSTON-SALEM, NC -The Winston-Salem Dash (41-60/13-18) exploded for 17 hits, while a big fifth inning resulted in a 10-1 Frederick Keys (52-48/16-14) loss on Monday night at BB&T Ballpark. Mason Robbins led the charge with five hits and three runs scored as the Dash trio of Robbins, Nick Basto and Marcus Davis went a combined 11-for-15.

Ahead 3-1 going to the bottom of the fifth, Winston-Salem plated five runs on five hits. Three straight singles got the inning started, while Davis doubled off the center field wall to score a pair. Genison Reyes came on for David Richardson with the bases loaded, and proceeded to strike out the next two batters, but could not escape. The next hitter, Cleuluis Rondon hit a comebacker off the leg of Reyes, which the Keys pitcher threw away allowing all three runs to score.

The fifth inning was book-ended by a Toby Thomas solo home run in fourth which just cleared the left-center wall, as well as a two-run sixth. After a wild pitch put a runner in scoring position, Basto singled to left and a fielding error by Zach Kapstein enabled Robbins to score. Back-to-back singles followed to make it 10-1 affair.

Frederick was limited to one unearned run over six innings by Thad Lowry. Taking the initial lead, the Keys got a single by Erick Salcedo, while a bunt single by Anthony Caronia and an error by Davis at first put men at the corners. Wynston Sawyer then added an RBI infield single. Lowry (7-6) settled in from there, allowing just three more hits over his final five innings to earn the win. He walked one and struck out three.

The Dash took the lead for good in the first, following a strikeout and an interference call, Robbins and Basto singled, while Davis doubled down the line. Both runs scored, though the Keys felt that it should have been a ground-rule double as the ball hit off an exercise band in right field. Following a brief delay where the umpires returned to their dressing room, the call was upheld and the Keys elected to play the game under protest.

Richardson (3-3) suffered the loss, surrendering eight runs (six earned) on nine hits in four innings. He walked two and struck out four. Drew Hasler worked the final three innings for the Dash to pick up the save.

The Keys and Dash play the middle game of their series tomorrow. Left-hander Mitch Horacek (4-9, 5.06) starts for the orange and black against Winston-Salem righty Robinson Leyer (0-1, 5.91). First pitch is slated for 7:00 p.m and the broadcast can be heard on 1450 AM The Source an frederickkeys.com. Frederick returns to Nymeo Field on August 1 when the Myrtle Beach Pelicans come to town.
