Hickory Crawdads News Release

ASHEVILLE, NC - In a battle of SAL All-Star starters, RHP Roman Mendez out-dueled LHP Edwar Cabrera, leading the Hickory Crawdads to the 2-1 victory against the Asheville Tourists before 2,204 fans at Historic McCormick Field in Asheville on Tuesday evening. The Crawdads have now won eight of their last nine games, as they continue in the race for the first half title with the Hagerstown Suns and Greensboro Grasshoppers.

After Crawdads RHP Roman Mendez (W, 6-1) and Tourists LHP Edwar Cabrera (L, 4-2) alternated scoreless first frames on the mound, the Crawdads (37-27) streaked in front with a pair of runs in the second. 3B Christian Villanueva started the inning with a solo home run, his team-leading seventh of the season. 1B Andrew Clark followed with a double and came in later in the inning on an RBI single by LF Alejandro Selen, putting the Crawdads in front, 2-0.

Asheville (30-35) responded right away, getting on the board in the bottom of the second. LF Corey Dickerson swung his way on with a one-out double, and was quickly brought in by an RBI double from 2B Helder Velazquez, cutting the Crawdads lead to 2-1.

From then on, the game belonged to Mendez and Cabrera, alternating scoreless inning after scoreless inning through the remainder of their outings. Mendez tossed a total of seven innings, allowing just the one run on seven hits with six strikeouts and only one walk issued. Cabrera lasted eight innings on the mound for Asheville, allowing only two tallies on eight hits with two walks and seven strikeouts.

Mendez gave way to RHP Joe Van Meter (S, 3), who closed the Crawdads 2-1 victory with two scoreless innings in the eighth and ninth, setting the 'Dads up for the potential sweep in Asheville on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m.
