Hickory Crawdads News Release
Kannapolis, NC - The Hickory Crawdads snapped their 6-game losing streak in emphatic fashion Thursday night, as Connor Sadzeck, Cody Ege and Sam Wolff combined to shutout the Kannapolis Intimidators in the 'Dads 4-0 win at CNC-Northeast Stadium.
Making his first start since the trade of teammate C.J. Edwards, Sadzeck looked every bit the staff leader with five scoreless innings pitched on one hit, two walks and two strikeouts. Ege and Wolff went the rest of the way, with the duo combining to shutout the Intimidators over the final four frames while both making their South Atlantic League debuts.
The Hickory hurlers were matched over the first seven innings by Kannapolis starter Mike Recchia, who allowed only five hits and fanned 8 over his seven-shutout frames. The Crawdads were able to take advantage of the Intimidators bullpen starting in the eighth however, as Ryan Rua broke up the scoreless game with a two-out, 2 RBI double to right to give the 'Dads a 2-0 lead.
The Crawdads doubled their advantage in the 9th, when Jordan Akins drove in a run on a double and Luis Marte singled in another tally to give the 'Dads a 4-0 lead.
Rua finished the game 1-4 with a double and two RBI, lifting his SAL leading RBI total to 79 and his league leading extra base hits mark to 53. Marte (3-4, RBI, run), Nomar Mazara (3-4, run) and Nick Williams (2-4, 2B, HBP, run) all put together solid games as well.
Ege (1-0) came away with the win for the 'Dads after holding Kannapolis scoreless over three innings on two hits and three strikeouts. Intimidators reliever Cal Bowling (0-1) took the loss for allowing two runs on two hits during his one inning of work.
Along with their July 15th and 17th wins, the Crawdads (17-15) last three victories have all come via shutout. The loss is the 6th straight for Kannapolis (12-21). The two teams will meet up again Friday at 7:05 pm for game two of their 4-game series.
