D.C. United News Release

Washington D.C. (October 15, 2012) - D.C. United's U-18 and U-16 Academy teams had two of its biggest wins of the USSDA academy season, coming against fierce rivals, the Baltimore Bays this weekend at Prince George's Community College.

U-18 Recap :

D.C. United's U-18 academy squad opened up the scoring early in a 3-0 defeat of the Baltimore Bays. The first goal came just 15 minutes into the contest after Abdi Yusuf made a strong individual effort that finished with a 20-yard blast to the far post. Yusuf again scored in the 59th minute to double the lead and Michael Seaton capped off the scoring in a dominant team performance that saw United best its local rivals 3-0 at Prince George's Community College.

"This was a very strong team performances. I'm happy for Abdi Yusuf and Michael Seaton, as both guys worked very hard for the team throughout the match and each deserved their goal(s). The overall team discipline and commitment to defense was excellent and the clean sheet was well deserved. We're looking forward to a weekend off and then focusing our efforts on our match versus Potomac," said Nolan Sheldon, head coach of D.C. United's U-18 Academy team.

U-16 Recap :

D.C. United's U-16 academy matchup with the Baltimore Bays was a little bit tighter than the U-18's, but the Black-and-Red came away with a 1-0 defeat. The lone goal of the match came in the first half when Chrisophe Koffi finished a rebound on Gerson Umana's shot inside the 18-yard box.

The squad showed a lot of discipline and heart as the team was forced to play a man down for the remaining 30 minutes of the game after a United player was shown a second yellow and subsequently was sent off. Despite being down a man, the Black-and-Red continued to push forward, creating scoring chances but failing to put one away.

"As expected, it was an extremely competitive match. Our defensive group was put to the test, even more so with having to play down a man for the second half. Goalkeepers and defensive players rarely get the glitz, but this positive showing was a culmination of that group putting in a lot of hard work at training, and staying organized and disciplined throughout the entire match. They were exceptional, and we were proud of the entire team's efforts against a quality opponent, but the group in the back definitely stood out," said Tom Torres, head coach of D.C. United's U-16 Academy team.

Both academy teams will be off this upcoming weekend and will play next on Sunday, October 28 against Potomac at Long Bridge Park in Arlington, Va.
