Cyclones Lose A "wild" One, Fall 6-5

BROOKLYN, NY- The Cyclones lost a back and forth battle to the Mahoning Valley Scrappers on Wednesday night, falling by the score of 6-5. Desmond Lindsay hit a mammoth two-run blast in the bottom of the eighth to give Brooklyn a 5-4 lead, but a sloppy ninth inning for the Brooklyn bullpen gave the lead back.

Justin Dunn made the start for Brooklyn and continued his impressive debut season in professional ball. The righthander tossed 3.0 shutout frames, scattering one hit and a walk while striking out five. The first round selection from Boston College topped out at 97 MPH on the radar gun and lowered his season ERA to 1.50. Gary Cornish, another 2016 draftee, took over on the hill in the fourth and set the Scrappers down in order. But his second inning of relief would not go as smoothly.

In the top of the fifth, the bottom of the order got things started for Mahoning Valley as Logan Ice and Alexis Pantoja - the eight and nine hitters - had back-to-back singles that put runners on the corners with nobody out. With the infield drawn in, Gabriel Mejia had a broken bat bleeder that was fielded by shortstop Colby Woodmansee, but there was no play to be made as Ice scored from third to take a 1-0 edge. Todd Isaacs followed with bunt single to score Pantoja and extend the Scrappers advantage to 2-0. But Cornish was able to limit the damage, retiring the next three batters he faced to escape the frame.

After being held without a hit through the first four frames, Colby Woodmansee led off the bottom of the fifth with a double down the left field line to instantly mount a threat for Brooklyn. After Blake Tiberi grounded out to advance the runner, Michael Paez hit a line shot to centerfield that was misplayed into an RBI double to trim the Scrappers advantage to 2-1. Jay Jabs then grounded out, as Paez advanced to third, before Brandon Brosher walked to put runners on the corners with two outs. With Anthony Dimino batting, and southpaw Ben Krauth on the mound for the Scrappers, Brosher broke for second when the lefthander threw a pickoff towards first. At the same time, Paez broke for the plate and was able to slide safely into home ahead of the throw from first baseman Nathan Winfrey to even the score at 2-2.

That's how it would stay, until the bottom of the seventh when Brooklyn would take their first lead of the game. Michael Paez walked to start the frame, stole second and came around to score on an RBI single from Anthony Dimino to give Brooklyn a 3-2 advantage heading to the eighth.

It would be in that eighth inning that the Scrappers claw back and take the lead. With LHP Gabriel Feliz on the mound, the southpaw walked the leadoff batter and plunked Enmanuel Tapia to put a pair aboard with nobody out. After Gavin Collins grounded out, moving the pair up a base, Nathan Winfrey drilled a double down the left field to score two and give Mahoning Valley a 4-3 advantage.

But Brooklyn responded in their next turn at-bat as the see-saw scoring continued. Ping-Hsueh Chen walked Luis Carpio on four pitches to start the frame and fell behind Desmond Lindsay, who connected on a 3-1 offering and send it 428 over the left field wall to give Brooklyn a 5-4 advantage. For Lindsay, it was his fourth home run of the season with all four coming at MCU Park. By comparison, the rest of the Cyclones roster has hit just seven home runs at MCU Park this season. The Cyclones looked like they would tack on some insurance runs later in the frame when Brandon Brosher hit a trickler down the first base line with a pair of runners aboard. The ball was fielded by pitcher Randy Valladares, and his throw down to first hit the Cyclones catcher in the back, but the home plate umpire ruled Brosher out for interference, taking a run off the board as Woodmansee had slid safely into home with what would prove to be a crucial tack on run.

Alejandro Castro (1-2) came on to pitch the ninth, looking to close out the win for Brooklyn but quickly found himself in trouble. Mejia led off the frame with a bunt single and would advance to third when a Todd Isaacs infield single was coupled with a throwing error my Brooklyn second baseman Michael Paez. Andrew Calica followed with a sacrifice fly that would tie the score at 5-5. With Erlin Cerda batting, Castro tossed a wild pitch allowing Isaacs to advance to second before another wild pitch, this time on a swinging strike three, allowed Cerda to reach first base safely while Isaacs moved over to third. Castro then threw his third wild pitch of the inning to allow the go-ahead run to score, giving Mahoning Valley a 6-5 lead.

Brooklyn would mount one last threat in the bottom of the ninth when Carpio and Lindsay worked back-to-back, two out walks. But Colby Woodmansee struck out to end the threat and the game.

The Cyclones will look to rebound on Thursday evening in the rubber match of the three-game set with the Scrappers. RHP Erik Manoah (5-3) will take the mound for Brooklyn. It will be the final Jersday Thursday of the season and the first 2,500 fans in attendance will receive an Ugly Holiday Sweater Jersey as we celebrate Christmas in August.
