Curve Split Wednesday Doubleheader with Sea Dogs

PORTLAND, Maine - The Altoona Curve split a double-header with the Portland Sea Dogs on Wednesday night at Hadlock Field, dropping the first game, 4-3, before picking a come-from-behind 7-4 win game two.

Altoona (67-54) extended its lead in the Western Division standings to 4.5 games over second-place Harrisburg, the Curve's largest lead of the season with the game two win over Portland (46-73).

Game One The Curve stranded 11 runners on base between the third and sixth innings, including three straight frames leaving the bases loaded, in a 4-3 loss in the first game of the night.

Kevin Newman gave the Curve a 1-0 lead in the third inning with an RBI single, the first of his three hits in the game.

Portland tied the score in the bottom of the third with an RBI single by Mauricio Dubon and took the lead when Aneury Tavarez scored on a passed ball against Chris Stewart.

Nate Freiman added to the Portland lead with a solo home run against Clay Holmes (Loss, 10-8) in the fourth.

Altoona rallied to tie the game in the fifth with a pair of RBI doubles by Anderson Feliz and Barrett Barnes.

The Sea Dogs answered in the bottom of the fifth on a run-scoring groundout by Dubon.

Portland reliever Ty Buttrey (Win, 1-9) worked around a pair of walks in 1.1 innings and snapped his nine-game losing streak. Ben Taylor (Save, 4) worked a 1-2-3 seventh to close out the game.

The Curve worked 10 walks in the game, tying a season high.

Game Two The Curve picked up their 32nd come-from-behind win of the season with late rally to take the second game of the double-header, 7-4.

Trailing 4-3 heading into the top of the sixth, Jon Schwind hit an opposite-field grand slam off of Williams Jerez (Blown Save, 4) to put the Curve in front, 7-4.

Alex McRae (Win, 6-6) set a new career high with eight strikeouts in the first complete game of his career, allowing four earned runs over seven innings.

Trailing 2-0 through three, the Curve jumped ahead in the top of the fourth with a three-run inning. Kevin Newman started the innings with a solo home run, his second of the season at Double-A.

Jin-De Jhang tied the game at 2-2 with an RBI single and Chris Diaz sinlged in a run later in the frame to put the Curve in front.

Portland reclaimed the lead, 4-3, with a two-run homer by Cole Sturgeon in the bottom of the fourth.

Eight of the nine Altoona starters registered at least one hit in the game.

Portland starter Jalen Beeks (Loss, 4-3) allowed five earned runs on seven hits in five innings.

The Curve and Sea Dogs wrap up the series on Thursday evening at Hadlock Field. The night begins at 5 p.m. with the completion of Tuesday night's game, which was suspended due to wet grounds in the bottom of the fourth with the Curve leading, 2-0.

The night's regularly-scheduled game will follow, and it will be a seven-inning contest. Lefty Cody Dickson (10-4, 3.87) will be on the mound for Altoona, countered by Portland right-hander Kevin McAvoy (7-7, 5.99).
