Curve Rally Before Rain Halts Tied Ballgame, 1-1

ALTOONA, PA - The Richmond Flying Squirrels were one strike away from defeating the Altoona Curve on Tuesday night at Peoples Natural Gas Field. However, the Curve rallied to tie the ballgame before heavy rains arrived at the ballpark. The game was then suspended, tied 1-1, heading to the 10th inning. The game will be picked up on Wednesday morning at 10:30 a.m., and will be followed by a nine-inning ballgame that will constitute the series finale.

Starting right-handers Casey Sadler and Taylor Rogers dueled through three scoreless innings before the Squirrels broke through first in the fourth inning. Ricky Oropesa and Andrew Susac recorded back-to-back singles to start the inning and Jarrett Parker bunted the runners up to second and third base. Ryan Lollis then gave the Squirrels a 1-0 lead with a groundout to second base.

Rogers provided a nice follow-up to lefty Jack Snodgrass's outing the night prior, as he blanked the Curve over five innings. He allowed just two hits and worked around five walks to leave with a 1-0 lead in his second start as a Squirrel.

Sadler had only the lone problem in the fourth inning and cruised through seven innings - matching the longest outing of his career. He conceded just the one run on five hits - three for Oropesa - walked two and struck out five.

The Squirrels turned to right-hander Edwin Quirarte following Rogers' departure. He worked a rapid-fire sixth and got one out in the seventh inning before giving way to lefty Phil McCormick. McCormick got the Squirrels through the seventh and also recorded the first two outs of the eighth. However, he also allowed a single and walked a batter to put the tying and go-ahead runs on base.

With two outs and two on in the eighth, Dave Machemer made the move to his closer, right-hander Daryl Maday. He struck out Carlos Paulino to end the threat and protect the Richmond lead to the ninth inning.

In the ninth inning, Maday recorded the first out, but then conceded an infield-single to Andy Vazquez. Maday recovered to strike out Gift Ngoepe and then took the Curve to their final strike with a 2-2 count on pinch-hitter Charlie Cutler. However, Cutler smashed a double into the right-field corner and Vazquez narrowly beat a relay-throw from Joe Panik to tie the ballgame, 1-1. Maday then fanned Jarek Cunningham to take the game to extra-innings before heavy rains came and suspended the ballgame.

Richmond LHP Chris Gloor (0-0, 9.00) makes the start against Altoona RHP Jameson Taillon (1-1, 1.64) in the ballgame following the completion of game two of the series. Pregame coverage begins on SportsRadio 910, SportsRadio910.com and IHeart Radio at 10:00 a.m.
