Richmond Flying Squirrels News Release

ALTOONA, PA - The Altoona Curve (6-9) scored six unearned runs in the eighth inning to pull ahead late, en route to a 10-2 win over the Squirrels(6-10) on Friday night at Peoples Natural Gas Field. The Curve utilized three errors in the big inning to even the series at one game apiece. David Whitehead (1-1) managed to earn the win despite walking six batters and hitting two more in the outing. Squirrels starter Joan Gregorio was saddled with the loss but struck out a season-high eight Curve batters in the process. Richmond catcher Matt Winn provided the offense by hitting his first Double-A homer. He added a double and scored both runs in the defeat. The two teams will play game three of the season Saturday afternoon at 1:00 PM

The Squirrels threatened early with four runners in the first and second innings but came away empty-handed. Christian Arroyo thumped a booming triple to straightaway centerfield in the first inning off starter David Whitehead. Arroyo was stranded at third due to Anderson Feliz flagging a sharp line drive off the bat of Hunter Cole to end the frame. Richmond suffered a similar fate in the second and third innings as whitehead walked three batters and hit one early on but worked around the trouble.

Altoona struck first against starter Joan Gregorio with a three-run third inning. Gregorio, making his third start of the season, had not allowed a run on the year until the third frame on Friday. Stetson Allie doubled to left on a ball that leftfielder Carlos Moncrief slipped when attempting to field. Altoona leftfielder Barrett Barnes then lifted a bloop single, setting up atwo-run triple to right field off the bat of Harold Ramirez for a 2-0 lead.Ramirez raced home on a wild pitch to extend the Altoona edge, 3-0.

David Whitehead did enough and battled trouble and control all night to earn the win. Whitehead walked six batters and hit a pair but allowed just one hit and no runs over five innings of work. Whitehead has now faced the Squirrels twice this year and has not allowed a run over ten innings workedagainst Richmond. The Curve turned to the bullpen to open the sixth inning by bringing in LHP Josh Smith. Squirrels catcher Matt Winn drilled a solo home run to left field to put Richmond on the board, 3-1. Winn added a double in the eighth inning and scored on a bloop base hit by Carlos Moncrief.

Gregorio (0-1) shouldered on after the unfortunate third inning. Gregorio collected a season-high eight strikeouts over six innings of work in the loss. He walked just one on 93 pitches and was replaced by Pedro Rodriguez, trialing 3-1, to start the bottom of the seventh inning. The wheels feel off for Rodriguez and the Squirrels as he was charged with three hits and four runs over 1 1/3 of relief. He departed the game with the base loaded in the bottom of the eighth. Tyler Rogers entered and induced consecutive ground balls that resulted in a pair of errors, plating three of the innings six runs. With the Squirrel defense faltering, Harold Ramirez took advantage and smacked his second two-run triple of the game to put the contest out of reach.

The Flying Squirrels road trip continues Saturday at 1:00 PM in Altoona with LHP Matt Gage (0-1, 8.22) faces Altoona RHP Jason Creasy (2-0, 5.63) Season tickets, mini plans, and group packages are currently available by contacting the box office at 804-359-FUNN or online at www.squirrelsbaseball.com.
