Curve Players Named to All-Star Team

Altoona Curve News Release

CURVE, Pa. - Altoona Curve 3B Adalberto Santos and RHP Ethan Hollingsworth have been added to the Eastern League Western Division All-Star team, the league announced today. It is the second career All-Star selection for Santos and the third career nod for Hollingsworth.

Hollingsworth, 26, is in his first season in the Pirates organization and his first season with Double-A Altoona after spending parts of last season in Double-A Northwest Arkansas and Triple-A Omaha in the Kansas City Royals organization. The right hander began the year in the Curve bullpen before recently helping the Curve in a spot starting role with the litany of doubleheaders in the past week and a half.

He started the month of June with a scoreless relief appearance of an inning on June 7 before being rushed back into duty to pitch in a spot starting role on June 9, just two days later. The Joliet, Ill. native was up to the task, tossing five innings of one-run ball in an eventual no decision. From there, he worked a pair of scoreless two-inning relief appearances before once again going back into the starting rotation.

Hollingsworth tossed a gem on June 24 vs. New Britain in the second game of a doubleheader, dealing six innings of scoreless one-hit ball with four strikeouts and one walk. He followed it up with 5.1 scoreless innings five days later, again in the second game of a twinbill, versus Akron at Canal Park. In the month of June, Hollingsworth was 4-0 with a 0.71 ERA. For the season, the righty is 5-3 with a 3.13 ERA at the time of this release.

This is Hollingsworth's third organization in pro ball after originally being selected out of Western Michigan University in the fourth round of the 2008 draft by Colorado. He was a mid-season All-Star in the California League in 2010 with Modesto while in the Rockies system. Before the 2011 season, Hollingsworth was traded to Oakland for P Clayton Mortensen and went on to be a Double-A All-Star with Midland in 2011. The Pirates acquired Hollingsworth in the Triple-A phase of the Rule 5 draft on December 6, 2012.

Santos, 25, tore through the Double-A level when he was healthy in 2012 (.340 average) but only played in 60 games so he returned to Curve, Pa. to start the 2013 season. The Bronx, N.Y. native picked up right where he left off in April for the Curve, beginning the season with a seven-game hitting streak before landing on the DL with a left hip issue in mid April. He returned at the end of the month and went on to continue his on-base streak, which wound up at 19 games from Opening Day (April 4) through May 9. In his 10 games played in April, Santos hit .400 (10-for-25).

After a tough month of May, the Oregon State product caught fire in the month of June, going on to hit for a .318 average (28-for-88) with six doubles, three homers and 14 RBI. He also drew more walks (14) than he struck out (13) in the month. Of the 25 games he played in June, he reached base safely in 21 of them. At the time of release, Santos is hitting .274 with 11 doubles, one triple, five homers and 28 RBI.

The 2013 campaign is Santos' fourth season in the Pirates system after being taken in the 22nd round of the 2010 draft out of Oregon State University. His only other mid-season All-Star selection came in 2010 when he made the New York-Penn League All-Star team as a member of the State College Spikes.

Altoona wraps up its series with the Binghamton Mets tonight at 6:35 p.m. before returning home to Curve, Pa. to open a five-game homestand on the Fourth of July. Thursday night's homestand opener will bring the biggest fireworks show of the year to Curve, Pa. thanks to the PA Lottery. The Curve will also be wearing special Stars & Stripes caps that will be auctioned off in game with a portion of proceeds benefitting the Hollidaysburg Veterans Home. After the game, kids will be able to run the bases.

Game time on July 4 is scheduled for 7 p.m. with gates opening early at 5:30 p.m. Toyota Diamond Club and Terrace Level seating are already sold out for the Fourth of July game while Grandstand and OF Reserve seats are moving fast.
