Akron RubberDucks News Release
Curve 9 RubberDucks 5
WP: Sean Keselica (3-0) LP: Nick Pasquale (3-5) Save: none
Summary
The RubberDucks offense socked three extra base hits, scoring five times, but it wasn't enough as the Altoona Curve roughed up Akron starter Nick Pasquale, winning 9-5 Thursday night at PNG Field.
Turning Point
The Curve matched the RubberDucks' three runs in the fourth after erratic pitching from Pasquale, taking back their lead for good on a Kevin Kramer RBI single to right field.
Winging It
Looking to rebound from his seven-run, five-inning outing in his previous start, Nick Pasquale blazed through the first inning on just six pitches. However, he began to scuffle in the second inning, allowing the first two runs of the game on Wyatt Mathisen's second homer of the season. After the Ducks tied it up in the third, Pasquale allowed one run in the bottom half on a Connor Joe sacrifice fly. The Ducks offense gave him a two-run lead in the fourth, but Pasquale was knocked out of the game when he couldn't seem to find his control, walking three straight and at one point tossing 11 consecutive balls. He finished with 3.2 innings pitched, five earned runs, three walks and a season-low one strikeout. Leandro Linares once again came in to provide scoreless relief for the RubberDucks, striking out two in 2.1 innings. Altoona starter J.T. Brubaker gave up five earned runs in four innings, striking out six and surrendering nine baserunners.
Duck Tales
For the second game in a row, the Ducks started their scoring with their third baseman driving in Yu Chang on a triple. Joe Sever played this role in the second game of the series, with Mark Mathias following in his footsteps Thursday night in the third inning. Sever, manning right field Thursday, then drove in Mathias on a flyball RBI single. Also like Wednesday, Chang followed up his run scored the next inning with a two-run double, this time scoring Jordan Smith, who also doubled in the inning, and Dorssys Paulino. Chang crossed home plate again in the fourth on Tyler Krieger's RBI single to take a 5-3 lead. However, Altoona took a one-score lead with a three-run fourth of their own. The Curve scored three more times later in the game on an error by Sever in the seventh and a two-run double in the eighth by Kramer.
