Summary
Altoona's Wyatt Mathisen hit a walk-off single to left field scoring Edwin Espinal to beat Akron 5-4 in the bottom of the 10th inning Tuesday night at Peoples Natural Gas Field.
Turning Point
Despite tying the game in the ninth when Eric Haase and Yu Chang hit solo home runs, Altoona rallied to win the ballgame in the bottom of the 10th when Edwin Espinal doubled and Wyatt Mathisen singled to score him to beat Akron.
Winging It
Akron starter Thomas Pannone was excellent Wednesday allowing just one run on three hits in six innings of work. His lone blemish was giving up a solo home run to Jordan Luplow in the second inning. Altoona starter Brandon Waddell also turned in a solid outing throwing six scoreless, allowing five hits and striking out six. Leading 2-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh the Akron bullpen could not hold on to the lead. Perci Garner entered and retired the first two batters he faced before running into trouble. Garner then allowed a single, made a throwing error on a pickoff attempt that allowed the runner to advance to second, followed by a walk. Garner exited the game and David Speer entered seeking one out to retire the side but allowed three consecutive singles to Elvis Escobar, Kevin Newman and Pablo Reyes that scored three runs for Altoona to retake the lead 4-2. Garner was charged for two of the runs and Speer charged for just one. Speer would go on to throw 2.1 innings allowing just the one run. Speer held the game at four in the bottom of the ninth and sent the game to extra innings. Cameron Hill entered for Akron in the 10th and yielded a double followed by a walk-off single by Wyatt Mathisen to win the game for the Curve.
Duck Tales
Trailing 4-2 in the ninth, Eric Haase hit a leadoff solo home run to begin the inning. Two batters later Yu Chang slammed his own solo shot to tie the game at four a piece. The Ducks offense got on the board in the top of the seventh when Bobby Bradley smacked a leadoff double and Yu Chang drove him in with an RBI single. Chang finished 2-4 with 2 RBI on the night. Akron would take the lead 2-1 when Mark Mathias hit a sacrifice fly that scored Chang in the seventh.
