Iowa Cubs News Release
The Iowa Cubs fell to the Omaha Royals, 3-1, Friday night at Principal Park in front of 6,012 fans.
Iowa's starting pitcher J.R. Mathes held the Royals to just two hits throughout the first six innings. It was Omaha's three-run seventh that put them ahead for good. Kila Ka'aihue led off with a single and Jordan Parraz hit a one-out home run to left field that landed in the blow-up baseball glove on top of the Cub Club. Parraz's two-run shot put Omaha up 2-1. Jai Miller then doubled and was driven in on Scott Thorman's single.
The Cubs' Bryan LaHair scored in the second inning on Marquez Smith's single. The Cubs threatened in the fourth inning, loading the bases on a single by Jim Adduci and walks by Chris Robinson and Smith, but could not score. Iowa did not get a runner to second base during the final five innings of the game.
Mathes (2-3, 5.34) took the loss, throwing 6.1 innings and allowing three runs on six hits. Omaha's Federico Castaneda (1-0, 0.00) picked up his first win of the season, throwing three scoreless innings.
The Cubs and Royals meet tomorrow at 6:35 p.m. at Principal Park. Righty Jay Jackson (2-2, 2.35) takes the hill for Iowa while Bryan Bullington (1-0, 2.08) gets the nod for Omaha.
