Cubs Hurler Angel Guzman to Rehab with Chiefs Tuesday

PEORIA, IL- The Peoria Chiefs in conjunction with the Chicago Cubs have announced that right-handed pitcher Angel Guzman will rehab with the Chiefs Tuesday night in Geneva, IL against the Kane County Cougars. Guzman is expected to start and throw one inning. Chiefs RHP Chris Archer, who was schedule to start Thursday, will follow Guzman on the mound. Guzman was placed on the disabled list on June 21 with muscle soreness in his triceps. So far this season, the 27-year-old Guzman is 2-1 with a 2.53 ERA in 28 relief outings. He has struck out 27 and walked 11 in 32 innings. Guzman pitched for the Cubs during parts of the 2006, 2007 and 2008 seasons and has 61 career MLB appearances under his belt. The Venezuelan native was signed by Chicago in November 1999 and pitched in the minors until this season. He was with Lansing of the Midwest League as a starter in 2002 going 6-2 with a 2.39 ERA in nine starts. After being injured during the 2004 season, Guzman pitched twice for the Chiefs at the end of the 2005 season. In a pair of starts, the right-hander went 0-1 with a 4.27 ERA and struck out seven over 6 1/3 innings. Overall he is 31-17 as a minor leaguer in 98 outings with a 2.92 ERA. It is not known how long Guzman's rehab stint will last or if he will pitch for the Chiefs again. He is eligible to come off the DL on Monday, July 6 when the Cubs host the Atlanta Braves. Guzman is the first Cubs player to rehab for the Chiefs this season. The rehab list since the affiliation change in 2005 includes: Nomar Garciaparra, Kerry Wood (2005, 2006 & 2007), Mark Prior, Juan Mateo, Wade Miller, Scott Williamson, Henry Blanco, Scott Eyre and Jon Lieber. The Chiefs begin a four-game road series Tuesday at 6:30 pm against the Kane County Cougars. Peoria will return home for the first time in the second half on Saturday July 4 for a ten-game home stand against the Beloit Snappers, Great Lakes Loons and Fort Wayne TinCaps.
