South Bend Cubs News Release

SOUTH BEND, IN - The South Bend Cubs dropped their final game of the home-stand to the Clinton LumberKings 11-9 as Pedro Silverio struggled in relief against the Clinton offense throughout the fifth inning.

The LumberKings led off the second inning with a double to put a runner in scoring position that later scored after two wild pitches from Cubs' starter Jose Paulino, who battled control issues throughout 3.2 innings of work.

Continuing in the top of the third inning, the Seattle Mariners' Midwest League affiliate loaded the bases on two walks and a single, which prompted a series of mound visits from Cubs' catcher Alberto Mineo, but only one run managed to score before Paulino worked out of the jam.

Nevertheless, like the night before, the Cubs took the lead in the third inning, this time with four runs on four hits with two walks.

In the top of the fourth inning, the LumberKings pulled within one run of South Bend with Luis Librato's sacrifice ground out.

Clinton then added five runs off Cubs reliever Pedro Silverio in the top of the fifth inning and three more runs in the top of the sixth to gain an 11-4 edge over the Cubs.

Silverio, who came into the game with a 3.86 ERA, surrendered eight earned runs on seven hits and four walks in 1.1 innings pitched, which led to him being with the loss, his third of the season.

Conversely, the South Bend offense took advantage of a Clinton fielding error and combined for four runs in the bottom of the sixth and one run in the seventh to make it a 11-9 ballgame.

Sparked by Kevonte Mitchell 's single, the Cubs threatened in the ninth, but with the bases loaded and one out, Isaac Paredes popped out to second base bringing the Cubs to their final out of the ballgame, which brought Chicago Cubs' No. 9 prospect D.J. Wilson to the plate for South Bend. However, after running the count full, Wilson struck out swinging to end the game.

With the loss, the Cubs finished the home-stand with a 4-1 record. They are now 10-3 in games played at Four Winds Field and hold one of the best home records in the Eastern Division of the Midwest League.

Next Games:

The South Bend Cubs will play their next six games on the road against the Burlington Bees (LAA) and Peoria Chiefs (STL). They will return to Four Winds on May 15 to take on the current Eastern Division leading Dayton Dragons.
