Crushers Power Past Freedom

Florence Y'alls News Release

Florence, Ky. - Richard Seigel, a former member of the Freedom, hit a go-ahead grand slam in the seventh inning to propel the Lake Erie Crushers over the Florence Freedom, presented by Titan Mechanical Solutions, 10-4.

With Florence leading 4-3 heading into the seventh inning, TJ Bozeman and Ethan Gibbons struggled, combining to allow six runs on four hits and three walks in the inning as the Crushers (31-38) took the lead for good. Lake Erie totaled three home runs in the contest.

Florence starter Tony Vocca labored in the first inning, allowing two hits and a walk to load the bases with only one out. Eric Grabe bounced a ball to shortstop, but the Freedom could not turn two and a run came in to score. Vocca stranded a runner on third base in the first and the second to keep the score at 1-0.

The Freedom took the lead in the third. Jordan Brower bounced a ball back to the mound, but Juan Caballero couldn't find the handle and Brower beat it out to reach on an error. Isaac Wenrich sent a single to center, but the Crushers were able to get two outs without a run coming in. Taylor Oldham came to the plate with two men on and pulled a three-run home run that hugged the left-field line all the way over the wall. It was Oldham's 10th home run of the season and helped him eclipse the 50-RBI mark.

The Freedom extended their lead to 4-1 in the fourth. Back-to-back batters, Collins Cuthrell and Josh Henderson, both stretched sure singles into doubles.

After three scoreless innings from Vocca, Connor Oliver lined a two-run home run to right field that pulled the Crushers within one at 4-3 in the fifth. Later in the inning, Pete Levitt replaced Vocca with two men on base and ended the threat by forcing a flyout to right. Vocca lasted 4 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on five hits and four walks, while striking out four.

The Crushers took the lead in the seventh on Seigel's grand slam and added an insurance run on a solo shot from Barraza in the eighth.

Oldham led the Florence offense once again with his long ball, while Cuthrell and Henderson both finished with doubles. Half of the Freedom's six hits were for extra bases. Bozeman took the loss as the Freedom used six pitchers in the game.

Manny Arciniega took the win, combining with two other relievers for five shutout innings out of the Lake Erie bullpen. Barraza posted four hits, including a home run, to join Seigel in leading the Crushers offensively.

The Freedom continue the series with Lake Erie tomorrow with a 6:05 p.m. first pitch. Florence starter Jordan Kraus (4-7, 3.09 ERA) will face his former team. The Crushers will counter with Connor Reed (2-1, 3.62 ERA). For full details on the upcoming promotions, click here.
