Gateway Grizzlies News Release

Sauget, Ill. - The Gateway Grizzlies offense was quiet on Sunday evening at GCS Ballpark as the Lake Erie Crushers avoided a sweep and beat Gateway, 3-2.

The two teams scored four runs combined in the first two innings while Lake Erie struck first to open the game. RHP Will Landsheft allowed a walk and a single to put a pair of runners on base in opening frame, as Eric Grabe then laced a run-scoring single to make it 1-0. Lake Erie (25-27) scored another run with a fielder's choice to extend their lead to 2-0.

Landsheft would find his groove from that point forward. He ultimately went six innings on the mound while allowing just those two runs on four hits total.

The Grizzlies (27-29) responded quickly in the bottom half of the second. Blake Brown ripped a two-out single against Crushers starting pitcher Mike Devine (7-2) for Gateway's first hit. Ben Waldrip then dug in and popped a two-run shot over the short porch in right field. Waldrip's fifth homer of the season evened the score at 2-2.

RHP Jon Pusateri (2-1) relieved Landsheft in the seventh and ran into trouble. Justin Byrd started the frame with a single while a ground ball would ultimately score Byrd with the go-ahead run to give Lake Erie a 3-2 advantage. The run was unearned.

After that, Gateway's bullpen settled down as RHP Ja'Vaun West tossed 1.2 scoreless innings and RHP Kevin Jefferis worked a scoreless ninth inning.

Gateway would get the tying run on-base a couple of times while trailing 3-2. Brandon Thomas started the seventh with a double against Devine but was stranded on-base. Lake Erie RHP Chandler Jagodzinski allowed a baserunner in the ninth but would retire the side to record his fifth save of the season.

Despite the loss, the Grizzlies still won two of three games from the Crushers in the weekend series.

The Grizzlies now head up to Michigan to take on the Traverse City Beach Bums on Tuesday night at Wuerfel Park. First pitch is set for 6:05 p.m. The game is the start of a six-game road trip for Gateway.

The game can be heard on the Grizzlies Radio Network with "Voice of the Grizzlies" Sam Levitt beginning at 5:50 p.m. on Tuesday evening. It airs on 1400 AM KJFF and online at www.GatewayGrizzlies.com/Radio.
