Syracuse Crunch News Release
Syracuse, N.Y. -- The Rochester Americans defeated the Syracuse Crunch 5-2 Friday at the War Memorial thanks to an Amerks scoring surge in the third period. Rochester scored three unanswered goals in a twelve-minute span to break a 2-2 tie and secure their third road victory. Suffering just their second regulation loss of the season, the Crunch are now 7-2-1-1 on the year. Riku Helenius had 18 saves for the Crunch. Rochester goalie David Leggio had 24 stops.
Rochester netted the game's first goal at 5:28 of the second when winger Nick Tarnasky ripped a point shot past Crunch goalie Riku Helenius. Maxime Legault and former Crunch player Rick Schofield assisted. Syracuse tied the game on the power play five minutes later when Richard Panik scored his fourth of the season-his third goal in four games-off a centering feed from Philip-Michael Devos. Alex Killorn also recorded an assist.
Panik's power-play score was the only special-teams goal on the night for Syracuse. The Crunch were 1-for-5 on the man advantage while stopping each of Rochester's three power plays.
Rochester right-winger Evan Rankin broke the tie later in the second period. His fourth of the year gave the Amerks a 2-1 advantage. Alex Biega and Marcus Foligno assisted.
Syracuse tied the game again at 3:45 of the third on a goal from Cory Conacher. Jared Nightingale took a shot from the point that went wide and bounced off the boards onto Conacher's stick at the side of the net. He jammed the puck in front and it popped over Leggio for Conacher's seventh goal and team-leading 13th point of the season.
Marcus Foligno netted his sixth of the season three minutes after Conacher's goal to give the Amerks a 3-2 advantage. Two minutes after that, 9:38 into the third, the Americans took a 4-2 lead when defenseman T.J. Brennan snapped a wrister past Helenius. Foligno and Brennan are tied for the Amerks team lead with six goals each. Foligno led all players with three points on the night. Bryan Flynn's fourth of the season capped the scoring at 18:08.
The Crunch continue a three-game home stand Friday against Hershey at 7:30 p.m.
