Syracuse, NY (November 18, 2009) - The Syracuse Crunch announced today that they have signed left wing Bates Battaglia to a professional tryout contract. As per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Battaglia, 33, appeared in 59 games with the Toronto Marlies last season, registering 17 goals, 34 assists and 55 penalty minutes. In 242 combined AHL games with New Haven and Toronto, Battaglia has compiled 64 goals, 116 assists and 231 penalty minutes. He was a member of the 2007-08 Marlies squad that edged the Crunch in seven games in the North Division Finals, contributing 5 points (4g, 1a) in the series.
In addition, Battaglia has skated in 580 combined NHL games with Carolina, Colorado, Washington and Toronto, tallying 80 goals, 118 assists and 385 penalty minutes. He has also notched 21 points (5g, 16a) in 42 NHL playoff games, with 14 points (5g, 9a) coming during Carolina's 23-game run to the 2001-02 Stanley Cup Finals.
Prior to turning pro, Battaglia appeared in 116 games from 1994-97 with Lake Superior State (CCHA), recording 31 goals, 64 assists and 160 penalty minutes. A native of Chicago, Illinois, Battaglia was selected by Anaheim in the sixth round, 132nd overall, in the 1994 NHL Entry Draft.
The Crunch travel to Albany on Wednesday, November 18 and Rochester on Friday November 20, before returning home to face Hartford on Saturday, November 21 at 7:30 p.m. at the War Memorial at Oncenter.
