Syracuse Crunch News Release
LAVAL, QUEBEC - Carter Verhaeghe and Cory Conacher scored for the Crunch, but it wasn't enough offence to surpass the Laval Rocket in a 5-2 loss today at Place Bell.
The loss snaps a three-game point streak for the Crunch and drops the team to 3-6-1-2 on the season.
Crunch goaltender Connor Ingram turned aside 20-of-24 shots on goal, while Zachary Fucale earned the win in back-to-back games with 28 saves. Both teams went 1-for-6 on the power play.
The Rocket opened scoring at the 7:56 mark of the second period while on the man-advantage. Niki Petti shoveled the puck out from the right wing boards to Nick Deslauriers all alone in front of the net.
Halfway through the frame, the Crunch evened the score. Mathieu Joseph wrapped around the back of the cage and passed off to Verhaeghe in the right circle. The center skated in and roofed a shot under the crossbar for his first of the season in his first game of the season.
Laval went back on top two minutes later. Jeremy Gregoire threw a centering feed from behind the goal line for Peter Holland to pick up at the post. He cut across the crease, flipped to the backhanded and chipped the puck in.
Just 19 seconds into the third period, Holland capitalized on a turnover at the point and netted his second of the game with a wrist shot from the right circle.
Syracuse pulled back within one with a power-play marker at the 5:56 mark. Jamie McBain faked a shot at the blue line and passed down to Verhaeghe in the left circle. He sent a cross-slot feed for Conacher to power home with a one-timer from the right faceoff dot.
Laval netted a power play goal of their own with 6:46 remaining in the contest. Daniel Carr received the puck from Holland, skated around the back of the cage and banked a shot off Ingram's arm from a sharp angle.
Holland finished a hat trick potting an empty netter with the help of Brett Lernout in the final minutes to secure victory for the Rocket.
The Crunch return to the War Memorial Arena to host the Charlotte Checkers on Saturday, Nov. 11 at 7 p.m.
