Syracuse Crunch News Release
SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Syracuse Crunch suffered a 4-2 loss to the Binghamton Devils in a penalty-riddled matchup tonight at the War Memorial Arena.
After going down in the first, Troy Bourke tied the game late in the period. Binghamton went on to build a 4-1 lead before Matthew Peca pulled the Crunch back within two with just over a minute remaining in the game. The Crunch couldn't rally back and move to 44-21-3-5 on the season. Despite the loss, Syracuse won the 10-game season series against Binghamton, 7-2-0-1.
Goaltender Connor Ingram turned aside 18-of-22 shots for the Crunch, while Devils netminder Ken Appleby earned the win blocking 36-of-38. Syracuse went 1-for-9 on the power play and 4-for-6 on the penalty kill.
The Devils opened scoring during 5-on-3 play at the 14:53 mark of the first period. Jacob MacDonald's shot from the slot went wide and ricocheted off the end boards. The puck dropped down for Christoph Bertschy to sweep in from the left post. Michael Kapla recorded a point on the opening tally.
With 3:09 remaining in the first, the Crunch evened the score. Carter Verhaeghe carried the puck down the left wing and passed over to Alexey Lipanov in the slot. Lipanov sent a behind-the-back pass for Bourke to go top shelf from the right circle.
Just 12 seconds later, Binghamton went back on top. Kevin Rooney won a battle along the end boards and dug the puck out to Michael Latta at the goal line. He tossed it through the crease for Tim Kennedy to beat Ingram short-side.
Brett Seney sniped one from the left circle on the power play late in the second period to build a two-goal lead for the Devils. Bertschy and MacDonald collected the helpers.
Binghamton added their fourth 11:58 into the final frame. Jan Mandat skated into the zone and scored from the top of the left circle. Ben Thomson and Brandon Baddock assisted on the play.
Syracuse stole one back on the man-advantage with 1:03 remaining in the contest. Erik Condra brought the puck behind the net and sent it to up Erik Cernak at the point. The blueliner fed Peca for a one-timer from the bottom of the right circle.
The Crunch travel to Rochester to face the Americans on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m.
Single game tickets and packages are on sale now and can be purchased in person at the Crunch office located inside the War Memorial Arena at 800 S.
