Crosscutters Fall in Ten Innings

August 9, 2007 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Williamsport Crosscutters News Release

HIGHLIGHTS: The Williamsport Crosscutters fell to the Staten Island Yankees 5-2 in ten innings Thursday evening. The Cutters took an early lead when Matt Spencer drove Dominic Brown home in the first inning. Williamsport added a run in the second inning on a single by D'Arby Myers that brought Michael Taylor in from third. New York-Penn League All-Star Chance Chapman controlled most of the game from the mound for Williamsport, allowing just one run on three hits over six innings while striking out seven. Chapman was in line for his fourth win until the eighth inning, when Staten Island tied the game, scoring a run against Cutters reliever Mosies Melendez. Melendez got help from his defense, however, which turned a bases loaded, inning-ending double play on an infield pop up. In the top of the tenth, the Yankees scored the eventual winning run on a wild pitch by Rick Austin, and added insurance runs on a two-run double by Damon Sublett to build a 5-2 lead.

The Crosscutters went down in order in the home half of the tenth. Jacinto Gonell earned the win for Staten Island, Jonathan Ortiz picked up the save, and Rick Austin (1-3) took the loss for Williamsport. The Cutters lost two of three in the series and head to Oneonta for a three games starting Friday evening at 7:05 p.m.
