Crawford Pulls Plug on Lugs Southpaw leads Loons to third consecutive victory

MIDLAND, Mich. - He left to a standing ovation from the 4,555 fans in attendance at Dow Diamond on Thursday night. Leo Crawford produced one of his best outings of the 2017 season to lead the Great Lakes Loons to an 8-1 win over the Lansing Lugnuts for their third win in a row. For the series, the Loons outscored Lansing 30-14.

Crawford (W, 7-10) kept Lansing off balance using is varied pitch delivery motions to his advantage scattering five hits in 7.1 innings allowing just one run. It isn't his longest outing of the season, however, as the lefty tossed eight innings on the road against the Quad Cities River Bandits on July 24. After pitching during the run to a 2016 Midwest League Championship last year, the 20-year-old has now appeared in 31 games, including 27 starts, in a Loons uniform during his career.

Unlike Thursday when the Loons and Lugnuts combined for eight runs in the 1st inning, both teams waited until the 4th to get on the board. Crawford's only run he surrendered was when J.B. Woodman singled and scored on a Javier Hernandez double. But three consecutive singles from Cody Thomas, Gavin Lux and Jeren Kendall with a sacrifice fly from Jared Walker put Great Lakes in front 3-1. Two runs in the 5th, another in the 6th and two more in the 7th ballooned the lead for the Loons and put the game out of reach.

Eight of the nine batters in the Loons lineup got a hit with Tyler Adkison the lone player to go without. He did draw two of the team's nine walks in the ballgame. In the four-game series, the Loons (24-29, 60-62) drew an astonishing 28 walks. Despite double-digit hits, Jeren Kendall was the only one to have a multi-hit game as he went 2-for-3 with two runs batted in and two walks.

James Carter extended his earned run scoreless streak with the Loons to five innings as he pitched 1.2 innings down the stretch allowing one hit with two strikeouts. Patrick Murphy (L, 3-3) took the loss for Lansing (21-32, 58-61) as he was charged with six runs (four earned) on eight hits in 5.1 innings pitched. He issued three walks and had three strikeouts.

It's back on the road for the Loons as they'll begin a four-game set against the Fort Wayne TinCaps on Friday. The team will return to Midland on Tuesday, when it will be the start of the seven-game homestand on August 22.

The Great Lakes Loons are the 2016 Midwest League Champions and have been a Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers since 2007.
