Crawdads Outslug Suns Again

HAGERSTOWN, Md. - In a battle of first place teams atop the South Atlantic League Northern Division, the Hickory Crawdads (22-16, 49-59) outslugged the Hagerstown Suns (20-16, 58-47) for a second consecutive night with 15 base hits in a 10-1 victory on Tuesday at Municipal Stadium.

Through the first two games of the series, the 'Dads are outscored the Suns 26-5; the most runs allowed by the Suns in back-to-back games since the Lexington Legends plated 28 runs at home between April 27 and 28.

Hickory opened the scoring with a two-out RBI single against James Bourque (Loss, 5-6) in the first and Chuck LeBlanc added a solo homer in the second. The Crawdads ballooned their lead to 5-0 in the third, highlighted by a two-out, two-run double from Anderson Tejeda. Bourque struck out four of the last seven batters he faced and exited after five innings with five earned runs on seven hits and six strikeouts.

Reiver Sanmartin (Win, 1-0) earned his first SAL win with six shutout innings and two hits allowed. He combined with Edgar Arredondo to strike out seven of nine Suns between the sixth and eighth innings.

The Crawdads added four more two-out runs in the sixth against A.J. Bogucki, who struck out the side in the same inning. Bogucki allowed four earned runs on six hits with four strikeouts in three innings of relief. Phil Morse gave up a sac fly RBI during his lone frame in the ninth.

Hickory scored 18 of its 26 runs with two outs in the first two games of the series. The Crawdads are also batting 16-for-38 with runners in scoring position.

Hagerstown managed only two base hits through the first eight innings on Tuesday but Blake Perkins led off the bottom of the ninth with a double and scored on an Aldrem Corredor single. No Suns tallied multiple base hits or drew a walk.

The Suns now sit second in the SAL Northern Division, trailing the Crawdads by one game. On Wednesday, they'll try to avoid the three-game sweep at 10:35 a.m. during Camp Day at Municipal Stadium. For tickets, call (301) 791-6266 or visit hagerstownsuns.com.
