HICKORY, N.C. - The Hickory Crawdads ran into some tough luck in the field late in the game, enabling the Charleston RiverDogs to come from behind for the 7-3 win before 2,095 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park on Monday night in the opener of the four-game series.
Both teams' starters -- RHP Wilfredo Boscan for the Crawdads and RHP Brandon Braboy for the RiverDogs -- dealt scoreless innings in the first, before the rain began pouring down and the game entered a rain delay. After a delay of 1:01, the game resumed with Braboy back on the mound for Charleston and RHP Fabio Castillo taking over for the Crawdads.
Charleston (8-10) cracked the scoreless tie in the bottom of the second against Castillo with two tallies. DH Addison Maruszak started the inning with a leadoff single and moved to second on a one-out base hit by 1B Tommy Baldridge. C Chase Weems then drew a walk to load the bases, before SS Jose Pirela was hit by a pitch to force in the game's first run. With the bases still loaded and one out, CF Abraham Almonte drove a pitch to left field for a sacrifice fly, putting the RiverDogs ahead, 2-0, through two.
The Crawdads (10-7) came racing back with three runs in the top of the fifth inning, which was started with a solo home run by LF Cristian Santana, chasing Braboy from the game. Facing RHP Dan Kapala, RF Miguel Alfonzo was hit by a pitch and quickly stole second base. SS Leury Garcia then reached on an infield single to get on, and after a double steal, the Crawdads had runners at second and third with no one out. CF David Paisano grounded a ball to third and was retired, but it brought in Alfonzo to tie the game and moved Garcia to third. Garcia then came in the final ninety feet on a wild pitch to put Hickory in the 3-2 lead.
Castillo kept the lead intact through the fifth inning, which was his final frame, and RHP Corey Ragsdale tossed a scoreless inning in the sixth and seventh, but things did not go quite as smoothly in the bottom of the eighth. RHP Mark Hamburger (2-7) took over on the mound and had five unearned runs come across the plate, as the Crawdads committed a season-high five errors in the inning and fell behind, 7-3.
Hickory loaded the bases with only one out in a comeback attempt in the top of the ninth, but RHP Jonathan Ortiz came on for the RiverDogs and pitched out of the jam to close the 7-3 win for Charleston. RHP Luke Prihota (1-0) earned the win for Charleston with 1.1 innings of scoreless late relief and Ortiz registered the save, while Hamburger was tagged with the loss despite not allowing a single earned run.
