Crabs Scuttle by 'Fish
(Bridgeport, Conn. - Sept. 12, 2012) - The Bridgeport Bluefish (29-29, 60-68) were defeated by the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (33-26, 63-66) by a score of 11-6 at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Wednesday. Bridgeport is 8-11 against Southern Maryland and trails the Blue Crabs by three-and-a-half games in the second half Liberty Division standings.
Luis Lopez earned a two-run homer to left for the home team. The shot to left was his eleventh homer of the season. Prentice Redman served a single to right to drive in Eddie Rogers. Rogers scored twice and smacked his eighth homer of the year on a drive to left in the ninth. Willis Otanez lifted a single to right to bring in the other Bluefish run on the night. James Simmons earned three hits on Wednesday while Kennard Jones reached base twice and scored a run.
Blue Crabs catcher, Richard Mercado, drove in the runners and earned a multiple hit night. Mike Daniel scored two runs and brought in two on two hits. Jesse Gutierrez brought in two runs on two hits while Cesar Nicolas drove in two and reached base three times. Casey Benjamin got on base five times and came to the plate twice for the winning team.
Bridgeport starter, Matt Pike (3-9), suffered the loss as the righthanded hurler delivered five innings of five run, six hit, five walk, and one strikeout baseball. Wanel Mesa and Kyle Zaleski finished the rest of the game. In four frames, the Bluefish tandem allowed six runs (four earned) on five hits and six walks while fanning six.
Southern Maryland starter, Ben Moore (3-2), earned the win as the Bluefish produced five runs on nine hits and struck out five in eight innings. Deinys Suarez gave up one run on two hits and fanned one in relief.
Bridgeport finishes a three game series against the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs on Thursday. First pitch is at 7:05 with the gates opening one hour before first pitch.
