Cougars to Honour Eric Brewer and Dr. Jeff Zorn this Weekend

Prince George, B.C. - The Prince George Cougars Hockey Club is pleased to announce that on Saturday, January 9th Cougars part-owner Eric Brewer and Dr. Jeff Zorn will be presented with WHL Alumni Achievement Awards. The two former Prince George Cougars defencemen will be on hand to receive the awards prior to puck drop verses the Victoria Royals.

As part of the Western Hockey League's 50th Season celebration, each WHL team will be recognizing two of their alumni with WHL Alumni Achievement awards. The professional hockey category (awarded to Brewer) recognizes a Cougars alumnus/WHL graduate who has gone on to play hockey at the highest level. The other Alumni Achievement Award category recognizes a Cougars alumnus/WHL graduate (Dr. Zorn) who has experienced a highly successful business career through support received from the WHL Scholarship program.

Originally selected 81st overall by the Prince George Cougars in the 1994 WHL Bantam Draft, Eric Brewer played three seasons with the Prince George Cougars (1995-1998). During his time in Prince George, Brewer represented Canada at the 1998 World Junior Hockey Championships, was named a second-team All-Star in 1998 and was selected fifth overall by the New York Islanders in 1997.

Since then, Brewer has played 1009 career NHL regular season games. He's scored 77 career goals along with 194 assists and 792 career penalty minutes with the New York Islanders, Edmonton Oilers, St. Louis Blues, Tampa Bay Lightning, Anaheim Ducks and Toronto Maple Leafs. Internationally Brewer has won five gold medals including a 2002 Olympic Gold from Salt Lake City, Utah. He won three World Championships with Canada in 2003, 2004 and 2007 and also captured a Gold Medal in the World Cup of Hockey in 2004 in Toronto. On April 30, 2014 the Western Hockey League announced that ownership of the Prince George Cougars had been transferred from Rick Brodsky to EDGEPRO Sports and Entertainment Ltd. a group that includes local Prince George businessmen Greg Pocock, Ernest Ouellet, John Pateman and Raymond Fortier along with Brewer and fellow Cougars alumnus Dan Hamhuis.

Dr. Jeff Zorn was originally selected by the Moose Jaw Warriors 67th overall in the 1994 WHL Bantam Draft and joined the Prince George Cougars prior to the start of the 1997-98 season. Jeff played in 130 career regular season games with the Cougars. Zorn's WHL career also included stops in Moose Jaw, Edmonton and Saskatoon.

After graduating from the WHL in 2000, Zorn chose to utilize his WHL scholarship and enrolled at the University of Alberta. Zorn spent the next five seasons with the Golden Bears hockey team and helped lead them to a national title in 2005. In 2002 he was named the CIS West Most Outstanding Defenceman and in 2004 he received the Dr. Randy Gregg Award given to the CIS Outstanding Student Athlete. He was named to the Canadian University Academic All-Canadian team four times during his CIS career. His next stop was medical school and in 2009 he received his Doctoral from the University of Alberta Medical School and currently lives in the Comox Valley on Vancouver Island working as part of the Urology Team at North Island Urology in Courtney, B.C.

Both Eric Brewer and Dr. Jeff Zorn will participate in a ceremonial faceoff before Saturday's game.
