Prince George Cougars News Release

Prince George, B.C. - Prince George Cougars General Manager Todd Harkins announced Thursday that the Prince George Cougars have signed 1999-born defenceman Ryan Schoettler (Lloydminster, AB) to a Standard WHL Player Agreement.

Originally selected by the Cougars in round seven (137th overall) of the 2014 WHL Bantam Draft, Schoettler (5'11", 171 pounds) is enjoying his second season with the Lloydminster Bandit Pipeline Bobcats. In 28 games this season he has registered five goals, 11 assists and 38 penalty minutes for a Bobcats team that recently won Silver at the 2015/16 Mac's Midget AAA Tournament in Calgary. At the event, Schoettler had the top plus-minus of any player and was named to the second all-star team. He had three goals and five assists in seven tournament games. In 2014-15 during his first season of Midget AAA, Schoettler had two goals and five assists for seven points and 14 penalty minutes in 33 games and in 2013-14 won a league championship and a Western Canadian Bantam Silver Medal with the Lloydminster Heat (Bantam AAA).

"We thought very highly of Ryan when we drafted him out of Bantam in 2014 and since then he has continued to improve and excel in all aspects of his game," said Todd Harkins who has now successfully signed five players from the 2014 Cougars draft class, three of which are defencemen. "In our minds, Ryan was the best defenceman at the 2015/16 Mac's Tournament. He showed great poise, strong two-way instincts and great leadership while helping his team to a Silver medal and we are thrilled to add a defenceman of his calibre to the Prince George Cougars family." Other signed players from the 2014 draft class include: Justin Almeida (Round 1), Max Martin (Round 2), Ethan O'Rourke (Round 3) and Peter Kope (Round 5).
