Cougars roll over rival
August 7, 2006 - Midwest League (MWL1) - Peoria Chiefs News Release
Geneva, IL - The Kane County Cougars made it three consecutive wins over their intra-state rival Peoria Chiefs, claiming a 4-1 victory Monday night in front of 3,960 fans at Elfstrom Stadium. T.J. Franco logged seven innings, and Chad Boyd had two doubles and three RBIs.
Franco's only run allowed was a two-out, first-inning home run by Jesus Valdez that provided a quick 1-0 Peoria lead. Then Franco cruised through his next six innings, and his offense provided support. Boyd ripped a two-run double off Chiefs starter Scott Taylor in the second for a 2-1 Kane County lead and cracked another run-scoring two-bagger in the fourth for a 4-1 game. Steve Kleen's sixth-inning sacrifice fly against Jesse Estrada became the final run of the contest.
Franco (3-1) allowed just three hits, walked one and fanned four in his third start and first win for the Cougars since heading to the rotation on a full-time basis. Rob Semerano tossed a scoreless eighth, and Joe Newby pitched a perfect ninth for his second professional save. Taylor (7-7) took the defeat for the Chiefs.
The Cougars (27-18) and Peoria (22-23) conclude their four-game series Tuesday night at 6:30 CT. Joe Piekarz (5-6, 3.38) will try to help Kane County earn the sweep against Todd Blackford (9-5, 4.97).
