GENEVA, Ill. - After going 6-4 on their 10-game road trip, the Kane County Cougars returned home to Elfstrom Stadium on Saturday night but lost their third game in a row. They fell, 8-1, to the Peoria Chiefs in the opener of a four-game series in front of 8,644 fans. The Cougars entered the game tied for first in the Western Division but now are only two games ahead of the Chiefs with 15 1st-half games remaining.
Starter Shawn Haviland (4-2) failed to get through five innings for the first time this year and gave up a season-high six runs on seven hits. He yielded three in the first inning but then got out of a jam in the second and sent down nine straight before ceding three more in the fifth. He walked two and fanned three in 4 1/3 innings in the loss.
Trey Barham gave up one run in 2 2/3 innings, Jason Ray allowed one in one frame and Mike Hart worked a scoreless ninth. The Cougars managed just five hits. Jeremy Barfield had two and reached base four times, and Steve Kleen notched a pair of doubles. The Cougars' got their only run in the bottom of the eighth on a throwing error that scored Christopher Berroa. Jeffrey Beliveau (1-2) picked up the victory for Peoria.
The Cougars (33-22) and Chiefs (29-24) continue their four-game series Sunday afternoon at 1 CDT when Pedro Figueroa (4-2, 4.56) faces Chris Archer (2-0, 1.46).
