Prince George Cougars News Release

Prince George Cougars Hockey School is about so much more than just skating, shooting and passing. It's the type of week where life-long memories and friendships are forged, and one where hopefully all participants not only leave as better hockey players, but also better people.

For Cougars captain Sam Ruopp, some of his earliest and fondest childhood memories stem from attending the Regina Pats hockey school. Growing up in Zehner, SK it was his closest option, and obviously one that helped inspire him to one day become a WHL player, captain and NHL draft pick of the Columbus Blue Jackets.

"I think it's great for the community and also great for the Prince George Cougars to get our name out there. It's amazing seeing the kids with big smiles on their faces and being so willing to learn," said Ruopp after a busy Day 1 yesterday at the CN Centre yesterday.

Starting at 7:30 AM and running through 5:00 PM, Prince George Cougars Hockey School provides all participants between the ages of 5-12 with two daily ice sessions, dry-land training, a lunch, a snack and perhaps best of all, the opportunity to interact with their favorite hockey players one-on-one.

Ruopp adds, "It's pretty crazy to think that it's all come full circle. I grew up attending the Regina Pats hockey school and that experience gave me people to look up to and it allowed me to dream big and that's what we're all about this week at the Prince George Cougars Hockey School."

This year, enrollment for Cougars Hockey School has nearly doubled compared to a year ago. It makes sense considering that the Cougars have 11 players and three coaches on hand with NHL experience. Some have travelled from as far as Yellowknife, YT and North Battleford, SK to participate. Plans are already in the works to enable even more kids to register next year.

"We are blown away by the positive response that Prince George Cougars Hockey School has received in recent days," adds Cougars Vice President - Business, Andy Beesley. "It's very rewarding watching the kids arrive in the morning a little nervous and quiet, but come 5 o'clock when it's time to go home, parents have a very difficult time getting them to leave because they are having so much fun. But believe me, they are exhausted by the end of the day."

Prince George Cougars Hockey School is proudly brought to you by Jack Schultz Auto Body and continues today through Friday at the CN Centre.
