Kane County Cougars News Release

GENEVA, Ill. - The Kane County Cougars battled back from a pair of seven-run deficits on Saturday afternoon against the Quad Cities River Bandits, but ultimately fell 13-10 in 11 innings at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.

With the Cougars trailing 10-7 in the bottom of the ninth, Jeimer Candelario and Rock Shoulders began the game-tying, three-run rally with a pair of one-out singles. After a Marco Hernandez groundout, Willson Contreras drove in Candelario with an infield single before Oliver Zapata tied the game by blasting a two-RBI triple as part of a 3-for-5, five-RBI day.

In the eleventh, Stephan Perakslis (0-1) issued a one-out walk to Roberto Pena who was then replaced by pinch runner Jordan Scott. After Scott stole second, Ryan Dineen delivered the winning RBI on a single to give the River Bandits (3-0) an 11-10 lead. Quad Cities tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the inning thanks to a sacrifice fly by Teoscar Hernandez and an infield singled from Carlos Correa who finished with five RBI.

Gerardo Sanchez (1-0) earned the victory for the River Bandits despite blowing the save opportunity in the ninth by throwing two innings, allowing five hits and three runs. Cameron Lamb (S, 1) earned his first save of the year by tossing a scoreless eleventh.

The Cougars found themselves down 7-0 entering the bottom of the second. Jose Arias started the game for Kane County and allowed seven runs on seven hits in an inning and a third. He surrendered six runs in the second, highlighted by a two-run homer from Carlos Correa.

Nathan Dorris was the first out of the bullpen for Kane County. He and Ian Dickson helped keep the Cougars in the game by holding the River Bandits hitless in the fourth through sixth inning. Dorris tossed two and a third innings allowing one run on three hits. Dickson threw five innings out of the bullpen. The righty allowed a pair of runs and four hits while striking out four.

The Cougars scored four unanswered runs in the fourth through the sixth inning before Quad Cities got back on the board in the seventh thanks to a solo home run from Pena and an RBI double by Correa. Kane County responded right away with a two-run homer from Oliver Zapata in the bottom of the seventh to bring the Cougars to within three, setting up the ninth inning comeback.

The Cougars will look to avoid the season-opening series sweep on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 when they take on the River Bandits at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark. Left-hander Michael Heesch (0-0) starts for the Cougars against lefty Brian Holmes (0-0). For tickets, call (630) 232-8811 or visit www.kccougars.com.
