Kane County Cougars News Release
GENEVA, IL - Todd Johnson had three hits and scored twice, three others had two hits and the bullpen led the charge on the mound as the Kane County Cougars erased a 4-0 deficit Wednesday and beat the Clinton LumberKings 6-5 in front of 4,296 fans at Elfstrom Stadium. The victory was the Cougars' first of the year in a one-run game.
Starter Andrew Bailey labored through 3 1/3 innings, giving up two unearned runs in the second, one in the third and another in the fourth. He gave up the four runs -- two earned -- on seven hits, walked three and fanned four, but the Cougars' took him off the hook with their comeback. Left-hander Derek Tharpe, in his first Cougars game since '05, gave up one tally in 3 2/3 innings of relief before Jason Fernandez and Scott Moore took it the rest of the way.
The offense came to life in the fifth with three runs off Zach Phillips. Alex Valdez drove in one with a fielder's choice, and Jermaine Mitchell doubled home Valdez and scored on a base hit by Larry Cobb. The L'Kings scored in the sixth off Tharpe to make it 5-3, but the Cougars tied the game in the seventh thanks to a sacrifice fly by Greg Dowling and a two-out, run-scoring single by Haas Pratt. Then in the eighth Johnson led off with a double, took third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on an error for a 6-5 count.
Fernandez (3-0) picked up the win, John Slusarz (1-3) took the loss and Moore posted his ninth save. The Cougars (21-44) and L'Kings (39-24) play again Thursday night at 6:30 CDT when Henry Rodriguez faces Broc Coffman.
