Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA - The Kane County Cougars shut out the Cedar Rapids Kernels, 1-0, in front of 3,346 fans Friday at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Austin Mason earned the victory in a combined shutout that featured four Kane County pitchers.

Colin Bray boosted Kane County (5-11, 38-48) to a 1-0 lead in the third inning. Facing left-handed pitcher Lachlan Wells, the switch-hitting Bray belted a home run to left field. It was Bray's second blast of the season and his first as a right-handed batter. That run was the only tally allowed by Wells, who also recorded three strikeouts over five innings pitched.

Carlos Hernandez started the Cougars' combined shutout with an early bid for a perfect game. Hernandez recorded seven straight outs to begin the contest. He ultimately pitched three-plus innings, posting three strikeouts in the process.

Mason relieved Hernandez in a very efficient effort. Luis Arraez had singled to open the fourth against Hernandez, but Mason came on to induce a fly out and then an inning-ending double play. He went 1-2-3 during the fifth to cap his scoreless outing.

Both bullpens shut down their opposing offenses in the final innings. Kane County's Jose Martinez and Keegan Long each tossed two scoreless innings. Cedar Rapids' Williams Ramirez tallied a game-high five strikeouts over three shutout innings before Anthony McIver fired a perfect ninth inning.

Cedar Rapids (8-8, 44-41) kept its hopes alive with a two-out single in the bottom of the ninth. Zander Wiel bounced an infield single up the middle to send up Nelson Molina, but he grounded out to first base to end the contest.

Mason (2-0) picked up the win while Hernandez claimed his first save and Long recorded his fifth save. Wells (1-1) took his first Kernels loss in the pitchers' duel.

Game two of this four-game series is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. Saturday with Kernels right-hander Dereck Rodriguez (1-10, 6.55 ERA) starting against Cougars right-hander Sam McWilliams (0-1, 2.79 ERA).
