Madison Mallards News Release

MADISON, WI - June 29, 2011. The Madison Mallards lost to the Green Bay Bullfrogs 7-1 in front of 5,567 fans at the "Duck Pond" Wednesday night.

Even the presence of special guest WWE Hall-of-Famer "The Million Dollar Man" Ted Dibiase could not help the Mallards on this night.

Green Bay got off to a fast start as David Popkins (UC San Diego) scored in the second on an RBI-single by Ryan Allgrove (UC Davis). The Bullfrogs also scored one in the third, taking a 2-0 lead into the fourth inning.

The game was defined by the play of the Mallards in the fourth. Green Bay scored four times on only three hits, as Trey Watkins (LSU) and Justin Scanlon (Michigan State) each committed an error. New Mallards' catcher Brent Kuper (Parkland College) also had a few passed balls and Bullfrog runners advanced on a couple of wild pitches as well. Green Bay also had two bunt singles.

The Mallards countered with one run in the fourth as Mike McQuillan (Iowa) scored on a hit by Justin Parr (Illinois).

Madison did not score after the fourth and gave up one more run in the fifth to give Green Bay the six-run lead. The Ducks had six hits on Wednesday, and no one had multiple hits.

Leading the way for Green Bay was Billy Moon (Gonzaga), who went 3-for-4 and had two RBI. Popkins also contributed with two hits in four at-bats, scoring three times. Allgrove was 1-for-1 with three walks and two runs scored as well. None of Green Bay's hits went for extra bases.

Earning the win for the Bullfrogs was starter Zak Hermans (Princeton). Hermans is now 2-2 on the season after going seven strong in arguably his best start of the season. He allowed one run on six hits, walked three and struck out seven. Both of his wins have come against the Mallards at Warner Park.

Ryan Bores (Cuyahoga Community College) was tagged with the loss. Bores (1-2) went four innings and gave up seven total runs (six earned). He walked four and struck out just one Green Bay hitter.

Also making appearances for the Mallards were Nick Sutherland (Minnesota State - Mankato), Zach White (Wake Forest), and Tony Bryant (Oregon State). Bryant pitched a perfect ninth inning and struck out the side on eleven pitches, ten of which were strikes.

With the loss, Madison moves into a three-way tie for first place in the South Division with Green Bay and Eau Claire. The Express lost in extra innings to Battle Creek in Michigan earlier on Wednesday evening.

The Mallards and Bullfrogs will play again Thursday in game two of the three-game set. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
