Cornish, Hughes Earn CFL Honours

July 2, 2013 - Canadian Football League (CFL)
Calgary Stampeders News Release

Two members of the Calgary Stampeders - running back Jon Cornish and defensive lineman Charleston Hughes - have been honoured by the Canadian Football League for their play in the Red and White's season-opening victory over the BC Lions.

Cornish has been named the CFL's Canadian player of the week while Hughes is the defensive player of the week.

Cornish, the league's reigning rushing champion, picked up in Week 1 right where he left off last season as he rushed for a league-best 172 yards and scored a pair of touchdowns in the Stamps' 44-32 win. He also had a catch for 20 yards for a total of 192 yards from scrimmage.

The seven-year veteran from New Westminster, B.C., has dominated the Canadian-player-of-the-week award since Week 14 of the 2011 season, winning the honour 13 times in the 28 weeks he's been eligible over that period.

Meanwhile, Hughes is the defensive player of the week after recording four tackles and sacking BC quarterback Travis Lulay three times in Week 1. The performance allowed the sixth-year defensive end to move past Kent Warnock and Harold Hallman and into fourth place on the Stampeders' all-time sacks list.

Hughes, who has a total of a dozen sacks in his 12 most recent regular-season games, has previously been named defensive player of the week on two occasions - Week 14 in 2011 and Week 9 in 2012.

The Stampeders' next home game is on Saturday, July 20 when the Montreal Alouettes will provide the opposition. Tickets are available at Stampeders.com
