June 27, 2008 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Winston-Salem Dash News Release

WINSTON-SALEM, NC - With the White Sox making several moves at all levels of the organization, many former Warthogs players are slowly, and in some cases not so slowly, climbing the ladder to Chicago's south side.

One prospect getting a serious look is outfielder David Cook. Cook, a ninth-round selection in the 2003 draft, was in Winston-Salem in 2006 and 2007. He started 2008 with Double-A Birmingham, batting .313 with 12 home runs and 30 RBI before being called up to Triple-A Charlotte in early June.

Since joining the Knights, Cook has hit a baffling .368 with two home runs and 9 RBI in 16 games, including a 4-for-4 performance against Richmond on June 17.

Also working his way to Charlotte is former Warthogs starting pitcher Clayton Richard. Richard, much like Cook, was a member of the Warthogs in 2006 and 2007 and started with Birmingham this season. The 6-foot-5 lefty was drafted in the 8th round in 2005 and was 6-6 with a 2.47 ERA in 13 starts for the Barons in 2008.

Richard is enjoying early success against International League hitters, going 3-0 with 12 strikeouts and just a 1.80 ERA in his first three starts. He has not walked a batter or allowed a home run in 20 innings of work at the Triple-A level.

The Warthogs have also seen two of their most promising players this season get called up-south paw Aaron Poreda and infielder Javier Colina.

Poreda was the 2007 first round selection by the White Sox, and is the No. 1 prospect in the White Sox organization according to Baseball America. In 12 starts in Winston-Salem Poreda went 5-5 with a 3.31 ERA. He was promoted to Double-A Birmingham on June 10 and is 0-2 with a 5.00 ERA in his first three starts, including a six-inning shutout of the Jacksonville Suns on June 20.

Colina was a free agent acquisition by the White Sox in January and started the year in Winston-Salem. He hit .306 off Carolina League hurlers, hitting three home runs and driving in 22 runs. Colina is struggling to get good at bats at the Double-A level, though. He is batting just .167 with no home runs and four RBI in his first 11 games with the Barons. His best performance came on June 17, when he went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI.

The Warthogs start their post-All-Star break schedule with a six-game road trip to Lynchburg and Salem. Their next home series' will be July 2-7 when the Hogs take on the Frederick Keys on July 2-4 and the Kinston Indians on July 5-7.
