South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
South Bend, IN - Starter Ryan Cook (WP, 2-0) turned in his third strong outing in a row, limiting the Dayton Dragons to just one run on three hits in 7.0 innings to lead the South Bend Silver Hawks to a 9-3 win Saturday afternoon at Coveleski Stadium.
Cook did not allow a hit until the fifth inning, and didn't allow a run until the seventh, long after the Silver Hawks had put the game out of reach. Cook joins Trevor Harden as the only two pitchers on the Hawks staff with two wins, and lowers his ERA to 1.42 on the season.
The Silver Hawks provided plenty of run support for Cook, scoring nine runs in the first five innings of the game.
Brendan Duffy started the home half of the first with a single, and scored three batters later when Nelson Gomez hit a sacrifice fly - the sixth RBI in the last five games for Gomez.
South Bend added two more runs in the third on an Alfredo Marte home run, his first of the season. An RBI triple from Ramon Ramirez in the fourth made it a 4-0 Silver Hawks advantage.
Then in the fifth, the Silver Hawks struck for five runs on five hits. Duffy and Elmore both doubled to start the inning, and Marte followed with an RBI single for the 6-0 lead, chasing Dayton starter Leonardo Astorga (LP, 0-3) from the game. In came Jesus Carnevale (ND), who was greeted with two straight doubles from Gomez and Justin Parker, making it 8-0. An RBI from Isaias Asencio on a fielder's choice rounded out the scoring in the inning, giving the Silver Hawks a 9-0 lead.
Byron Wiley provided the lone bright spot offensively for Dayton, going 2-for-3 with two RBI.
The four game series continues with game two Sunday afternoon at 2:00 PM at Coveleski Stadium. The Silver Hawks will send LHP Taylor Sinclair (0-0, 2.57 ERA) to the mound for his third start of the year, while the Dragons counter with LHP Matt Fairel (0-1, 3.09 ERA). Pregame coverage begins at 1:40 PM on 1620 AM "The Point" and online at www.silverhawks.com.
