Condors Trumped By Aces In Shootout

October 25, 2007 - ECHL (ECHL) - Bakersfield Condors News Release

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The Condors rallied to tie the game late, but lost in the shootout 3-2 to the Alaska Aces Wednesday night, in front of 4,833 at Rabobank Arena. Eric Sonnenberg scored his first goal of the year with 4:24 remaining in regulation, forcing the extra session.

The Aces (1-1-0, 2 points) struck first at the 17:13 mark of the first period, as Kimbi Daniels was able to roof the puck over the left shoulder of Jamie Hodson for the game's first goal.

The Condors (2-0-1, 5 points) came out strong in the second period and quickly tied the game with Mark Derlago's power play goal, assisted by Steven Later and Sean Venedam just 23 seconds in. The Condors were able to capitalize on a power play left over from the first period, as Later slipped his way through the Alaska defense, then dropped a perfect backhand pass to a cutting Derlago, who snapped the puck past Derek Gustafson for the score.

The Aces responded at 4:25 with Matt Robinson finding himself on a break away, surging towards Hodson in goal. Right as Robinson was able to wrist a shot on goal Brett Lutes got his stick around Robinson's right arm, and was called for the hook. The play then resulted in a penalty shot, which Robinson scored on, putting the Aces back in the lead, 2-1.

The Condors came back late in the third, as Sonnenberg cut from the back door and was set up perfectly on a centering pass from Andrew Ianiero for the game-tying, power-play goal. Spencer Carbery also picked up an assist on the play.

Neither team found a way to score in overtime, and the game went to a shootout.

Notes: The Condors completed the homestand 2-0-1 and now go on the road for the next nine games, starting in Phoenix on Friday with a 7:11 p.m. tilt against the RoadRunners and a Saturday match up with the Fresno Falcons, beginning at 7:30 p.m.
