Bakersfield Condors News Release

The Bakersfield Condors attracted some national and international interest yesterday with the acquisition of Japanese goaltender Yutaka Fukufuji. His assignment to the Condors by the Los Angeles Kings is featured on the front page of www.nhl.com under the "Top Stories" section. The link connects to an article that ran on Thursday in the Bakersfield Californian, and was written by Mike Griffith.

The Los Angeles Kings sent the young netminder on Thursday to the Condors after attending training camp with the Manchester Monarchs - their top affiliate in the American Hockey League. He took the ice with Bakersfield today as the Condors opened training camp at the Bakersfield Ice Center. The article was originally posted to the ECHL website, www.echl.com on Thursday morning. Fukufuji made waves when he debuted in the ECHL during the 2002-03 season as a 20-year old. He played nine games with the Cincinnati Cyclones that season as the first Japanese goaltender to skate in the ECHL.

Fukufuji became just the second Japanese player ever drafted by an NHL team this summer when he was chosen as 238th pick in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft. The Montreal Canadiens selected Hiroyuki Miura in the 11th round of the 1992 draft. Fukufuji played earlier this year with the Japanese National Team at the World Championships and dominated in Asian play last season.

Training camp continues for the Bakersfield Condors on Saturday morning as they take the ice from 7:15 - 8:45 a.m. On Sunday, the Condors are on ice from 8:30 - 10:00 a.m. on Sunday morning, with the Open House and Family Day schedule from 2:00 - 5:00 p.m. The 2004-05 season opens in 14 days at home on October 22nd against the Victoria Salmon Kings. Ticket packages are on sale now for as low as $30. Contact the BSE office at 324-PUCK (7825) for more information.
