Command Players Earn League Honors
April 13, 2011 - Arena Football League (AFL)
Kansas City Command News Release
With a win finally on the books and a few days to bask in the glory of victory, the COMMAND players are getting back to business and prepping for what may be their toughest opponent yet - the undefeated Arizona Rattlers.
The COMMAND's performance as a team this past week enabled them to defeat a team that the analysts had picked to triumph. But where a win is recognition of the team's collective achievement, individual efforts by certain COMMAND are now being recognized beyond mere points on a scoreboard.
The Arena Football League has selected two COMMAND players for its Week 5 Awards; Defensive Back Sergio Gilliam, and Wide Reciever/Linebacker Bradly Chavez.
Sergio Gilliam: Riddell Defensive Player of the Week
Gilliam (6-3, 195, Clemson) set a Kansas City franchise record with three interceptions in the Command's 62-48 victory over Iowa. He finished Week 5 with five tackles and one pass breakup.
Gilliam has played for both the Arizona Rattlers and the Spokane shock; he lead the Shock in interceptions for two years in a row (2008-2009).
Bradly Chavez: JLS Ironman of the Week
Chavez (6-2, 220, UAB) made his presence felt in all three phases of the game in the Command's first victory of the season in Week 5. He had five catches for 72 yards and found the end zone three times in the team's 62-48 win against Iowa. He added 2.5 tackles on defense and two pass breakups on defense and returned a kick for six yards.
Chavez who is becoming known for his post-touchdown celebrations, is no stranger to winning Ironman awards; he won Ironman of the Year in 2008 playing for the AF2's Manchester Wolves.
Head Coach Danton Barto responded to the awards by saying "the whole team played well this past weekend, and it's what got us the win. But we're definitely proud any time our individual players are recognized for the hard work they put in on the field for the Kansas City fans".
