Kansas City Comets News Release

Kansas City, MO – The Kansas City Comets have signed forward Aleksey Korol (kuh-ROLL) to one-year and option and defender Matt Tanzini to a three-year contract, the club announced on Friday. As per club and league policy, terms of the agreements were not disclosed.

Korol, 25, was a three-time All-Big Ten selection while at Indiana University (1997-99). In 1999, the 5-10, 160-pound Korol was named the Big Ten Player of the Year and earned First Team All-American honors while finishing fourth in the voting for the Hermann Trophy, collegiate soccer’s equivalent of the Heisman. He was also named to Soccer America’s “Team of the 1990’s.”

Selected by the Dallas Burn with the fifth overall pick of the 2000 Major League Soccer draft, he spent three seasons in MLS with the Burn and Chicago Fire, totaling seven goals and 18 points in 37 games. This past summer, the native of Ukraine (who grew up in Rochester) scored four goals and 11 points in 20 games for the Pittsburgh Riverhounds of the A-League.

The 27-year-old Tanzini began his indoor career with the Buffalo Blizzard in 2000-01, scoring 10 points and blocking seven shots in 11 games before a knee injury ended his season. He joined the Harrisburg Heat in 2001-02, and in two seasons scored 28 goals and assisted on 22 others while blocking 65 shots in 72 games. Tanzini, a native of Binghamton, NY, earned back-to-back junior college national titles while at Herkimer (NY) Community College and holds a B.A. in Liberal Arts & Sciences from West Virginia University. He has also played for the U.S. National Futsal Team, coached by Milwaukee Wave skipper Keith Tozer.

“We’re pleased to add two talented young players in Aleksey and Matt,” said Comets Coach and Vice President Zoran Savic. “They bring a lot of energy and a great work rate to this team, and they’ll help us at both ends of the field.”

The Comets will face the rival St. Louis Steamers in an exhibition game this Saturday, September 20, at the Family Arena in St. Charles. Kansas City took the first exhibition game with the Steamers this past Tuesday, recording a 15-11 win at Kemper Arena. Dino Delevski scored four goals, and Brian Soell and Jamar Beasley added three goals apiece in the win. Admission is free for this game. For more information, contact the Comets at 816-474-2255, or the Steamers at 636-410-0388.

Kansas City will wrap up the preseason by participating in the MISL Easter Seals Preseason Classic at U.S. Cellular Arena in Milwaukee on September 26 and 27. The Comets face the defending champion Baltimore Blast at 2:00 p.m. and the Philadelphia KiXX at 8:00 p.m. CST on the 26th, and take on the San Diego Sockers on the 27th at 4:00 p.m.

The Comets will open their 2003-04 regular season when they host the Steamers at Kemper Arena on Saturday, October 11. Kickoff is 7:35 p.m. Central Time.
