Comeback Falls Short against K-Wings

BRAMPTON, ONTARIO - The Brampton Beast were down by three goals after the opening frame and mounted an incredible comeback with a pair of goals in the second period and another in the third but the visiting Kalamazoo Wings pulled ahead in the end and picked up their eighth straight victory in a 4-3 win over the Beast at the Powerade Centre in Brampton on Wednesday night.
Nick McParland, Steven Kaunisto and Luc-Olivier Blain each lit the lamp for the Beast, while Kenny Reiter and Jordan Ruby combined to make 21 saves between the pipes.
The K-Wings came out flying in the opening period and jumped out to a 3-0 lead by the 13:50 mark of the first period. Evan McEneny notched his first goal of the year at 6:58, then Anton Cederholm jumped out of the penalty box and fired a perfect shot over the arm of Beast starter Kenny Reiter at 12:05.
Less than two minutes later, Justin Taylor deflected a point shot behind Reiter for his 25th goal of the year at 13:50. Taylor's goal chased Reiter from the net after allowing three goals on nine shots against. Jordan Ruby entered the game in relief.
The Beast dug deep after a lacklustre first period and came out flying in the second frame. McParland took a perfect cross-ice pass from David Ling and snapped a quick, low shot that beat K-Wings starter Joel Martin for McParland's 11th goal of the season at 8:24.
The Beast continued to press throughout the second period and were rewarded for their efforts. Steven Kaunisto located a puck in the crease with the goaltender down and out swept the puck into the open net, cutting the deficit to 3-2 at the 16:45 mark of the second period.
The K-Wings locked it down defensively in the third period and pushed their lead to 4-2 at the 11:39 mark as Ludwig Blomstrand squeaked one through Ruby's fivehole for his 29th goal of the season.
But the Beast didn't give up. Mitch Zion and Luc-Olivier Blain entered the K-Wings on a 2-on-1 and Zion found Blain in front with a perfect saucer pass. Blain responded with an equally impressive deflection behind Martin at 16:58, cutting the lead to 4-3.
The Beast pulled the goaltender in the dying minutes but Martin and the K-Wings shut the door to earn their eighth consecutive victory.

The Beast return to action on Friday, April 8 as they host the Elmira Jackals for their final home game of the 2015-16 season. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:15 PM.
