Roanoke Dazzle News Release

ROANOKE, Va. – The Roanoke Dazzle saw their lead in the NBDL standings dwindle to a half game over second place Columbus as the Riverdragons defeated the Dazzle, 92-89 at the Roanoke Civic Center Tuesday night. A game that was decided in the final 30 seconds of regulation, Columbus (22-11) managed to edge a depleted Roanoke (23-12) as Columbus had five players in double-digit scoring.

Despite leading at halftime, the Dazzle was unable to keep their lead as the Riiverdragons came out strong, accelerating to a 12-point lead with just 2:30 left in the third quarter. Fighting back in the fourth, the dynamic duo of Isiah Victor and Miah Davis chipped away Columbus’ lead to a tie with just 3:00 left. The Riverdragons capitalized on the new 3-point rule with a Reed Rawlings jumper at 1:46. The Dazzle was unable to respond back, as they could only close the gap to one before a Rawlings dunk with just :14 left to clinch the win.

“We had them down but they made a couple of runs on us,” said Columbus Assistant Coach Dean Murray, who was filling in for absent Jeff Malone. “At the end we kept them from taking it to the rim. They were taking jump shots and that’s what won the game for us.”

For the first time in a Dazzle match-up, the Dragons were able to shoot above 40% from the field, making 38 of 76, a 50% average. The charge was led by Leroy Hurd with 15 points and Mike Benton’s double-double of 15 points and 11 rebounds. Scott Merritt tallied 14 while Reed Rawlings posted 13 and Adam Harrington poured in 12.

A depleted Dazzle team, losing stars Matt Carroll and Cory Alexander to Gatorade Call-Ups to the Charlotte Bobcats, still had four players with double-digit scoring. League leading scorer Isiah Victor lived up to his reputation by leading all players with 21 points. James Thomas, the league’s best glass cleaner, added another double-double with 17 rebounds and 14 points. Point guard Miah Davis added 19 points while Seth Doliboa notched another 12.

“It took them all the way down to the end to get us,”said Dazzle Head Coach Kent Davison. “That says something of the character of the guys in our locker room. You want to win every game, but as a coach, to have guys go out and bust their butt for you night in and night out, that is what coaching is all about.”

The Roanoke Dazzle the Florida Flame next on Thursday, March 3, 2005 at the Germain Arena in Fort Myers, Florida, game time 7:30 p.m. For more information log on to www.nbdl.com or visit www.roanokedazzle.com.
