Columbus' Matt Gingera Named Easton Player Of The Week

January 23, 2013 - SPHL (SPHL) News Release

HUNTERSVILLE, NC (January 22, 2013) - The Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) today announced Matt Gingera of the Columbus Cottonmouths is the Easton Player of the Week for January 14-20.

Gingera became just the second player in SPHL history to record hat tricks on consecutive nights and totaled seven goals in three games in leading the Cottonmouths to a 3-0 record last week. Gingera, who scored his seven goals on just 11 shots, also tallied two game-winners and was +7 in the three games.

The native of Winnipeg, Manitoba began the week by scoring the first goal of the game Tuesday night as Columbus went on to defeat Augusta 4-1. On Friday, Gingera's third-period goal gave him his first professional hat trick and proved to be the eventual game-winner as the Cottonmouths doubled up Pensacola 4-2. Saturday's 4-2 win over Augusta saw Gingera record his second consecutive hat trick, joining Matt Whitehead who accomplished the feat with Pensacola on November 26-27, 2010.

Gingera is currently riding a six-game point streak, having recorded nine goals, three assists and a +11 rating in that span. Gingera signed with Columbus on December 10 after playing 17 games for Tulsa (CHL), where he logged a goal and four assists. Before turning pro, he played four seasons collegiately at Sacred Heart University alongside current Snakes teammate Chris Bailer and led the team in goals his junior and senior seasons. Gingera played junior hockey in Manitoba with the hometown Winnipeg Saints, where he led entire MJHL in goals (66) in 2007-08 and finished as all-time leading goal scorer in Saints history (149).
