Lexington Legends News Release

The Columbia Fireflies scored 12 runs in the first four innings and went on to a 16-2 win over the Lexington Legends Wednesday afternoon at Whitaker Bank Ballpark.

Dan Rizzie had five hits in six at bats for Columbia, and drove in three runs.

The Fireflies took the early lead with two runs in the top of the first inning. Andres Gimenez drew a leadoff walk and moved to third on a single by Jacob Zanon. Desmond Lindsay grounded to first baseman Joe Dudek, whose throw to home was too late to get Gimenez. Rizzie's two-out single scored Zanon with the second run.

Columbia added a run in the second when Colby Woodmansee singled, moved to second on a ground out and scored on a double by Gimenez.

Zanon's single triggered a four-run rally in the third. After Zanon moved to second on a wild pitch, Lindsay hit a ground ball to shortstop Angelo Castellano, and Zanan beat Castellano's throw to third as Lindsay reached first on the fielder's choice. Dash Winningham singled, scoring Zanon, and Rizzie's single scored Lindsay, giving Columbia a 5-0 lead. Luis Carpio reached first on an error by Castellano, loading the bases. A ground out by Jay Jabs scored Winningham, and Woodmansee's ground out plated Rizzie, giving the Fireflies a 7-0 margin.

A five-run outburst in the fourth inning gave Columbia a 12-0 lead. Gimenez started the inning with a single, and after Zanon grounded into a force play at second, Lindsay followed with a single. A passed ball put runners at second and third. Winningham's ground out scored a run, and Rizzie doubled home another. After Jose Veras relieved starter Jace Vines for Lexington, Carpio singled, putting runners at first and third. Jabs capped the inning with a three-run homer over the right field wall.

The Legends got on the board with a run in the bottom of the fourth. Yeison Melo singled, moved to second on a wild pitch, to third on an infield hit by John Brontsema, and scored on a single by Vance Vizcaino.

Columbia sent nine batters to the plate in the top of the seventh inning and scored four more runs on three hits, a walk and two errors.

The Legends scored the game's final run in the eighth when Meibrys Viloria doubled, went to third on an infield out and scored on Vizcaino's sacrifice fly.

Columbia starter Chase Ingram (1-0) worked five innings and got the win in his first start for the Fireflies this season.
