Tucson Sidewinders News Release

Tucson, AZ - Colorado Springs' hot bats were too much for Tucson in a 11-9 loss on Saturday night. Both teams had 17 hits in the game, but two Sky Sox runs in the top of the 9th inning proved to be the difference.

In the first inning a Seth Smith sacrifice fly scored Cory Sullivan and Colorado Springs would hold the lead through in a contest that featured 20 combined runs scored.

The Sky Sox produced 7 more runs in the third and fourth inning. The runs in the third came off a Joe Koshansky sac fly and two RBI singles from Sean Barker and Kenny Perez. In the fourth Smith hit an RBI single, Barker had sac fly, and the inning was capped off with a Perez two RBI triple to give Colorado Springs a 8-0 lead.

The Sidewinders got on the score board in fourth inning when Josh Whitesell led off the frame with a double and was later brought in by a Phil Avlas sac fly.

Colorado Springs put up one run off another Smith sac fly in the fifth to extend their lead, but the Sidewinders cut to three runs in the bottom of the fifth with a five run inning. Tim Raines, Jr hit a 2 RBI double and then Donnie Kelly hit a three run home run to make the score 9-6.

In the ninth the Sky Sox were able to add two more runs due to a hit by pitch and wild pitch with the bases loaded by Tucson reliever, Emiliano Fruto. The Sidewinders put up three runs with a Jesus Merchan two RBI single and a Donnie Kelly RBI double in the bottom of the ninth but were unable to pull out the win.

The Sidewinders will face the third game of the series against Colorado Springs on Sunday at 6:00 PM. RHP Matt Torra (0-0, 0.00) is scheduled to start for Tucson. Right-hander Jason Hirsh (0-0, 3.65) will start for the Sky Sox. The game will air live on COOL 1450 beginning at 5:50 p.m.
